Greetings!

July 1. The beginning of the second half of the year. Three days before the celebration of the 250th anniversary of the United States. It's also International Joke Day. I wonder who determines that sort of thing? Pretty much every day of the year has some significance. And, for an individual, making memories on a particular day can be special.

One thing that helps to make memories is a trip to the museum. What you will experience might make a memory. The current StitchPunk exhibit certainly warrants memories. So many clever ideas. You must, must, must, come for a visit. If you have already been - come again and bring a friend (or three)!

“The six of us have traditional quilt making

backgrounds, but felt the need to do something different. We were inspired in classes taught by art quilters (to name a few—Jean Wells, June Jaeger, Carol Stocking, Sue Carlson, Rosalie Dace). Thus learning new techniques.

“We all enjoy the challenge of using contemporary and abstract elements and not having to conform to rules.

“We meet monthly and share ideas as we push ourselves to ‘Think outside the box’”

Molly had a birthday. She turned 21! We gave her a peanut (which is apparently a craze with younger people.) It is very soft and very cute and cuddly.

She was only slated to work for the museum for 140 hours. She has finished that time frame but wants to stay longer. She has donated and is still donating her time. We are very honored to have her at the museum.

For the first time, the museum had a presence at Porchfest. Thanks to board members Nancy Sterling, JoAnn Stevens, and Chris Walker plus Kim Sterling and Tina Albrecht and Molly - we had a grand time. Chris supplied a giant canvas with thought provoking questions on it. He engaged visitors to answer the questions and to add to the art. There were people of all ages having a wonderful time creating art. The "painting" now hangs in the museum lobby. Come and see!

The Josephine Community Library has engaged children and created a new Storybook Walk in downtown Grants Pass. They asked the children to complete the sentence: "One day, I planted a magic seed and...." and the results are amazing. Each story is delightful. The children wrote the stories and illustrated them. Below is the one hanging in our window. Definitely worth a stroll downtown. (sorry for the glare)!

Walter waits for a treat! Passersby and customers of Tailholt Coffee are offered the opportunity to feed a treat to Walter. His owner is often seen outside the coffee house greeting others, supplying Walter's treats and enjoying his morning joe. Everyone loves Walter and Katherine Abdun-Nur captured his essence in this wonderful painting. It hangs in the Tailholt Coffee House through the end of July. (By Katherine Abdun-Nur)

FEATURED ARTIST FOR JUNE

Katherine Abdun-Nur

My “Into the Marsh” series is inspired by a year’s seasonal exploration of our Oregon landscape, primarily the Denman Marsh near the base of the Table Rocks, here in the Rogue Valley. I am inspired by the movement of the water over the ponds, the breezes, clouds, the reeds and rushes, and getting caught in the rain!... The marsh hosts a surprising variety of bird life; songbirds, herons, geese, waterfowl, and raptors. The geese, so elegant in flight and so awkward in their ground movements are a joy to capture in paint. I hope you’ll experience the feeling of the marsh as I do when you see the work.

I am a student of birds; local birds, migratory birds, and birds in other climes. Often I’ll sketch onsite, taking photos for reference and creating more finished paintings in the studio. Overlooking our garden with feeders and fountains, I’m able to daily observe the activities and behaviors of the southern Oregon populations. I hope you’ll find some familiar species; and can appreciate my interpretation of these common and not-so-common visitors.

Because the museum is a member of the Ashland Gallery Association, if you are a member of the museum, and an artist - you can participate in the following call for art. It's at the Collaborative Theater Project in Medford.

About the Exhibition

In collaboration with the Collier Gallery at CTP (Collaborative Theatre Project), the Ashland Gallery Association welcomes members to participate in its Member Exhibition!

Currently, the Collaborative Theatre Project is the only theatre space in Southern Oregon that features visual art exhibitions in conjunction with its main stage productions. Beginning with their first performance in 2017, the organization envisioned a space to promote local artists by offering a venue for artists to exhibit their work, to grow their clientele, and to contribute to the overall creative atmosphere at the Collaborative Theatre Project.

The Member Exhibition will take place from Thursday, August 27 to Sunday, September 20. To learn more about the Collier Gallery at CTP, please click here.

Participation Details

Members of the Ashland Gallery Association are eligible to participate and submit up to three two-dimensional works of any size, but no longer than 48" in width. The height can be larger. Please note that three-dimensional work will not be accepted at this time due to logistical limitations in the space. Members who are represented by a gallery must seek approval before submitting work and participating in this exhibition.

Because there are always space limitations, work will be hung on a 'First Come/First Serve Basis', based on the order in which responses are received from the Participation Form.

The Member Exhibition at the Collier Gallery at CTP will serve as a fundraising initiative to support the Ashland Gallery Association. 20% of artwork sales will be donated to the Ashland Gallery Association to support future programming and operations, 20% will be donated to the Collaborative Theatre Project to support future programming and operations, and members will receive the other 60%.

The deadline to participate is Friday, August 7, at 5:00 p.m.
