Norwalk Community School District • February 2023

NOTE FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT

World Class Schools for Our Students:

Leadership Changes

The Norwalk CSD has new legislative leaders for the 2023 and 2024 legislative sessions. The 2022 election brought new legislative boundaries and instead of 2 senators and 3 representatives covering a portion of our district, we now have 1 senator and 1 representative. Please feel free to contact Senator Julian Garrett at julian.garrett@legis.iowa.gov or Representative Stan Gustafson at stan.gustafson@legis.iowa.gov. You can find contact information for all Iowa legislators at this link: https://www.legis.iowa.gov/legislators/find. There is a lot of proposed legislation that will impact Pk-12 education in Iowa currently being considered by the Iowa Legislature. I encourage all NCSD patrons to stay informed and share your thoughts and opinions with our elected representatives.

Claire Boswell

2022 Student School

Board Representative

Aidan Harder

2023 Student School

Board Representative

The start of the second semester brings a transition in student leadership on the NCSD Board of Directors. The Board thanked 2022 Student School Board Representative Claire Boswell for her year of service at the January 9 Board meeting and welcomed 2023 Student School Board Representative Aidan Harder at the January 23 Board meeting last month. Claire is the fourth student to serve in this role and continues a new and strong tradition of student leadership on the NCSD Board of Directors.

I have the pleasure, along with 505 NCSD staff members, to work with outstanding students and student leaders, like Claire and Aidan, on a daily basis. Claire and Aidan both provide me with a sense of optimism and hope for the future.

Thank you Claire and Aidan for your leadership and thank you Claire for picking the theme for our district this year - LISTEN - SEEK FIRST TO UNDERSTAND THEN TO BE UNDERSTOOD. Aidan, I look forward to the 2023-2024 school year theme you will set for our district.

Yours in service,

D.T. Magee

Norwalk HS Art Department Update

by Angela Davidson, NHS Art Teacher

The NHS Art Department is offering multiple classes this year which include Intro to Art, Pottery 1 & 2; Painting, Drawing, Metals/Jewelry, AP Art and Art Appreciation. We are seeing a large quantity of students interested in concurrent classes of Painting, Drawing, Pottery 2 and Art Appreciation. Students are able to earn High School Credit and DMACC credit.

The fall semester had 3 sections of students in Art Appreciation. This was the largest group of students that came along on the Des Moines Art Center Field Trip. This was a great opportunity to have a museum tour and Norwalk students truly enjoyed the experience. Art Appreciation students learn about art history as well as exploring various art mediums.

Art Club members enjoyed creating a canvas mural for the new common area called the Warrior Zone.  Grace Smith (Junior) created the design concept for the 4 - canvas mural.  Each canvas incorporates the handprints of Seniors, Juniors, Sophomores and Freshman as part of the background.  Mural Team students worked on painting the design on the canvases.  The project is complete and is waiting to be installed in the new space.
