Walkerville Tavern owner Cara Kennedy
New owner brings passion, experience to The Walkerville Tavern

A veteran of the restaurant industry is finding success as a first-time small business owner.

Cara Kennedy, 47, has worked in food services for 33 years - most recently managing an Applebee's restaurant in Windsor. But last month she took the leap into entrepreneurship by purchasing The Walkerville Tavern in Olde Walkerville.

Enigma Escape Rooms, a Small Business Centre client and Starter Company grant recipient, took home the Bix X Magazine Award for Outstanding New Business in 2015. The gala was held Nov. 20 at St. Clair Centre for the Arts.

Starter Company

Starter Company is an Ontario government program that provides people aged 18-29 with the resources and knowledge needed to start and grow their own business. The program includes one-on-one guidance from the Small Business Centre, mentoring with local professionals, funding of up to $5,000 and access to the following workshops.

Anthony Peticca, owner of A&S Roadworks, received $5,000 from the Starter Company program towards expanding his construction business.

Ryan Cant - Starter Company grant recipient

Ryan Cant was awarded $5,000 from Starter Company for his startup business, Envirodrone -- a commercial drone company that offers surveying, mapping and surveillance services.

SBC at High School Entrepreneurship Summit
Celebrating Global Entrepreneurship Week

The region celebrated Global Entrepreneurship Week during a number of events and initiatives Nov. 16-2. The WindsorEssex Small Business Centre held a series of workshops and sponsored and judged the 18th annual Biz X Magazine Awards on Nov. 20. We also participated in the High School Entrepreneurial Summit, hosted by Downtown Windsor Business Accelerator on Nov. 19. The summit drew over 400 local students to St. Clair Centre for the Arts in Windsor.

WindsorEssex Entrepreneur Support Network launches

WindsorEssex Small Business Centre celebrated the launch of WindsorEssex Entrepreneur Support Network Nov. 16 at Windsor City Hall. The network is comprised of 16 local organizations that provide support to entrepreneurs through in all stages of business development.

Youth Entrepreneurship Roundtable at EPICentre
Windsor-Essex Youth Entrepreneurship Roundtable

The Ontario Government recently launched a comprehensive Youth Jobs Strategy aimed at helping young people from across the province find work, build job skills or start their own business with new funds, programs and online tools.

The Small Business Centre team was on hand at EPICentre at the University of Windsor on Nov. 13, where Daiene Vervile, MPP and Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Research, spoke about the province's $27 million investments over two years in entrepreneurship programs. Following the announcement was a roundtable networking session and three presentations from local entrepreneurs in our community, including SBC client Kyle Devine, owner of Devine Personnel.
