Annual Small Biz Expo Returns
October is Small Business Month in Canada, and a great opportunity to highlight Windsor and Essex County entrepreneurs.

Now in its third year, the WindsorEssex Small Business Centre will host its signature, annual event, the Small Biz Expo, on October 18, 2017, from 5pm to 9pm, at the Giovanni Caboto Club, in Windsor.  Admission to the public will be free, but the Small Business Centre is encouraging people to bring canned goods or donations for a local charity.

The Small Biz Expo is a free, public event that showcases the diversity of independent small business products and services from Windsor-Essex.   Area residents, who love local, can shop local at the expo, where they will find regional food and drink vendors, retail products in fashion, beauty, health, and homewares, and consumer services. There will also be networking opportunities, live demonstrations, door prizes, and entertainment.

Some of the businesses set for this year's expo include food and beverage vendors such as Robbie's Gourmet Sausage Co., I LUV Coffee, Sweet Revenge Bake Shop, and Licia Ruby Food Co.; artisan businesses such as Urban Art Market, Windermere Art Gallery, Witch and Whimsey, and Dave's Woodworking; and mind and body vendors, H'OM Wellness Centre and Optimal Chiropractic.

Pitch Day Means Business for Innovative U of W Program
Craig Pearson | Windsor Star

It's like getting paid to go to school. But it's all about business.
The University of Windsor's EPICentre on Wednesday hosted Pitch Day - this year's culmination of an innovative three-year-old program that actually pays participants to build their own businesses.

The EPIC Founders program - sponsored by RBC and the Ontario Centres of Excellence - pays 12 young entrepreneurs $6,000 to complete a 12-week program in which they don't just learn about business, but actually create one.

"It's great," said Nicole Anderson, the EPICentre program director. "It's nice because students don't have to find a full-time job through the summer. They can actually work on something they're passionate about."

Summer Company Experience Provides Life-Long Education
Dave Waddell | Windsor Star

School doesn't start until next week, but for the 18 students who graduated from the Summer Company program Monday they've received an education that you won't find in textbooks that'll last a lifetime.
"This program is absolutely fantastic," said 17-year-old Aiden Bradwell, whose business, Bradwell Applications, offers computer and phone software training for seniors.

"It's a real good opportunity for anyone who's interested in turning their dream into reality and taking the next step in what they want to do with their lives."

The program is run through the Small Business Centre as part of the WindsorEssex Economic Development Corporation.

Sip De Soleil Offers a Healthy Alternative
Matt Weingarden | Lakeshore News

Cherry Bomb, ChocoLIT D-Lite and Takes 2 to Mango are just three of the tasty smoothie options available at Belle River new business upstart Sip De Soleil.
With the help of the WindsorEssex Small Business Centre, Rachel Barrette, a University of Windsor psychology student opened up Sip De Soleil smoothie stand this summer in response to a lack of healthy drink options in her neighbourhood.

"Belle River has been a very up and coming little town. Slowly the beach is becoming beautiful and the marina is hopping," said Barrett, 21. "I what I figured was missing was a healthy alternative to a smoothie shop - so I decided to open one. It's been really successful so far."

Sip De Soleil is located at 643 Notre Dame St. In Belle River. Customers are encouraged to walk up to the beachside stand and grab healthy, vegan smoothies.
