A message from Jasmine E. Sessoms, Founder of She Can Win

I went on a vacation...10 days, with my husband and no kids. We went to a beautiful island where the drinks flowed, food was wonderful, and there was nothing to do but relax. It’s been a little less than 2 years since we’ve been able to do a getaway and I savored every moment.

But there was a nagging… a feeling of what is going on with work...I hope this got finished in my absence...or as soon as I get back I’ll do this…

Luckily I have a mate that all but threw my phone in the ocean if I tried to do more than respond to a quick text question, but the feeling never left- I came back to the states and jumped right into working 12 hours days- back to back conference calls, caring for my 2 young daughters and hubby, and I am exhausted all over again. It almost feels like I went away 3 months ago and not last week. This is a scary feeling for me. I felt so relaxed, and free the vacation was what I needed to clear my mind but now I am struggling to find how to do the same in my day to day life. I am not alone in this thinking.

Black Women are exhausted because we work twice as hard to be competitive with our counterparts, we hold up our households all while trying to make this look effortless.

I recently read an article about Black Women being exhausted https://www.washingtonpost.com/business/2021/08/20/black-women-professionals-rest/

It talks about how the pandemic has done a number on our mental and physical health and how we have to start prioritizing self care more. I am going to start taking my advice, setting boundaries, disconnecting, and focusing on my well being. It’s an old adage but one that I need to repeat daily: “you are no good to anyone if you aren’t here”.

I will find my rhythm and find my balance and I am urging you to do the same. Don’t come back from paradise and do the same things you did before you went. Hard lessons were learned this week, but I’m applying them!

Philadelphia Race Riot, image from https://www.blackpast.org/wp-content/uploads/Columbia_Avenue__Philadelphia_Riot__1964-1.jpg

August 28th: 8/28/1964

On Friday, August 28, 1964, a scuffle with police at the intersection of 22nd Street and Columbia Avenue sparked a three-day riot involving hundreds of North Philadelphians hurling bottles and bricks at police and looting stores. With the Columbia Avenue Riot (Philadelphia Race Riot), Philly joined six other cities that erupted in African American protests. The riot reflected long standing anger at the Philadelphia Police Department and growing divisions among African Americans over a recent shift to more confrontational street protests. The unrest generated key momentum for local activists that arguably culminated in the election of the city’s first African American mayor, Wilson Goode in 1983. Watch this video of narrated clips of the riot: https://vimeo.com/314145901
