Expectations: Behaviour Guides

Youth have a lot to gain from quality programming, so how can Scouters support youth who exhibit challenging behaviours and provide quality programming to the other youth in the Section?

Have a Section Code of Conduct o This clearly sets expectations (and consequences of not meeting those expectations) o Section Codes of Conduct are age-appropriate (check out the examples from the Behaviour Guide)

  1. Positive reinforcement goes a long way o Recognize and celebrate the successes of youth who are working on improving their behaviour

2.Engage with Parents o Approach supporting youth who are exhibiting challenging behaviour in a collaborative way with parents o Does the youth already have a support plan in place at school? What works at home? Implement similar strategies for consistency

3.Follow through.
  • If consequences have been outlined in the Section Code of Conduct or in an Behaviour Support Plan – stick with what’s been outlined
  • Document everything o Save the Section Code of Conduct and follow-up verbal conversations with an email Link to the

The certificate is available on scouts.ca in the recognition section near the bottom

Kids have great ideas, but sometimes those ideas need support to ensure they’re safe, practical and age/skill appropriate.

For example, if a  Beaver Scout wants to go skydiving, that’s a great idea but they’re legally    too young for the activity. To help them experience the thrill of skydiving    while staying realistic, why not go to a skydiving simulation vault for a    fun day that is completely safe and at their skill/age level?

By starting with  “yes”, we encourage youth to think big and take the lead. Bringing in the equally important “and” component, we’re empowering youth to plan, problem-solve and adapt their idea so that it can be achieved in a practical way.
