SAFETY UPDATE
Spring Safety Week: Starts April 3rd

Scouts Canada will be relaunching HeadSafe with 'new' tips, and resources covering concussions, helmet safety and all things Head Safety!

Sign up to Receive an invite when the event date is announced here: https://forms.office.com/r/yFN7rbEvyp

Featuring a Guest Speaker: Jennifer Dawson, PhD - Research Associate and Guideline Developer for the Living Guideline for Pediatric Concussion Care from the Children Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO) Research Institute to discuss all this HeadSafe.
Safety in Scouting: The Two-Scouter Rule
The Two-Scouter Rule is paramount to the safety of youth entrusted to our care while they are enjoying Scouting adventures. No one Scouter should be alone with one or more youth (other than their own children).
The Two-Scouter Rule is one way that we safeguard youth in Scouting programming. Why follow the Two-Scouter Rule? There are many reasons, and when we get down to the root of the “why”, the Two-Scouter Rule is there to keep kids safe.

Please report any violations of the Two-Scouter Rule to [email protected], or call 1-800-339-6643 to discuss urgent youth protection matters.

Safety in Scouting: There's an App for that

Use the ScoutSafe app when submitting incident reports.
Submitting incident reports via ScoutSafe is beneficial because:
• Reports submitted via the app includes more information than a PDF incident report – that means less follow-up questions for Scouters to answer!

• The use of ScoutSafe means that Scouters can also submit photos of the injury, site where the injury occurred, etc.

• Submitting reports via ScoutSafe means that reports are submitted and received in real time – that means a more timely response from Safe Scouting with support resources and check ins on the injured party.
• After submitting a report, reporting parties can easily save the incident report as a PDF to their device and share with the Group for records keeping if necessary

If Scouters don’t already have the ScoutSafe app on their phone or other smart device (Android or iOs), click here
Onboarding Process Volunteers:
Scouts Canada has comprehensive policies and procedures in place to ensure the safety of youth:

Adults appointed to positions of authority with youth undergo a vetting process which includes; application forms, interviews, police record checks (including vulnerable sector searches), references and youth protection training with Respect in Sport.

Expectations: Behaviour Guides

Youth have a lot to gain from quality programming, so how can Scouters support youth who exhibit challenging behaviours and provide quality programming to the other youth in the Section?

Have a Section Code of Conduct o This clearly sets expectations (and consequences of not meeting those expectations) o Section Codes of Conduct are age-appropriate (check out the examples from the Behaviour Guide)

  1. Positive reinforcement goes a long way o Recognize and celebrate the successes of youth who are working on improving their behaviour

2.Engage with Parents o Approach supporting youth who are exhibiting challenging behaviour in a collaborative way with parents o Does the youth already have a support plan in place at school? What works at home? Implement similar strategies for consistency

3.Follow through.
  • If consequences have been outlined in the Section Code of Conduct or in an Behaviour Support Plan – stick with what’s been outlined
  • Document everything o Save the Section Code of Conduct and follow-up verbal conversations with an email Link to the

Thyme is Running out for Scout Seeds

Online Store Closes April 30th

It’s always a good time to support your local Scouts. Now is the best time to  start a window garden, then move them outside later in the Spring!
When the time is right, you will have healthy plants to put in your outdoor garden. Scout Seeds are the perfect way to save money, feed your family, or simply bring a little colour to your garden, balcony, or windowsill.

Can’t decide on which seed combo you’d like?
Lettuce suggest the Garden Salad Plot. It’s delicious and would work well in a window box or outdoor garden.
