Abilities First Expands Educational Programs

to Middletown and New Windsor

Abilities First celebrated the acquisition of two educational centers in Middletown and New Windsor, NY. The centers now support approximately 200 preschool and school-age students with developmental delays or disabilities. A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held on Oct. 23 at the Middletown Education Center, which serves children ages 3-8 at 379 Mount Hope Road, alongside the Educational Learning Experience in New Windsor, which serves children ages 3-21 at 930 Raz Ave.

The event brought together dignitaries, supporters, families, and staff, highlighting these facilities' personalized education and support. AFI's President & CEO Dr. Jeffery Fox expressed gratitude to The ARC Greater Hudson Valley for entrusting Abilities First with the programs and noted that both centers are actively hiring to meet a strong demand for specialized educational services.

Local representatives, including the office of State Senator James Skoufis and Sandra Brownsey, Orange County Director of Early Intervention and Rita Burns, Coordinator of Children and Youth with Special Health Care Needs Program in Sullivan County commended Abilities First on their effort to maintain these essential services in the community.

Celebrating National Disability Employment Awareness Month:

National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM) highlights the importance of inclusive workplaces that support people with disabilities, reminding us of the immense value diverse perspectives bring to any organization.

At Abilities First, we experience this firsthand through the dedication and contributions of employees like James Williams, a valued member of our Residential Administrative Office team.

As Kathy Heller with Residential Services, notes, “James serves as our Janitor, and his positive spirit and willingness to help others enrich our team every day. James’s willingness to help others and his friendly nature never go unnoticed or unappreciated. Thank you for all you do, Jimmy!”

The commitment and unique perspectives of team members like James enhances our culture, inspire those around them, and underscore the true benefits of inclusive employment. NDEAM celebrates the talents of people with disabilities and showcases how equal opportunities foster independence, community connection, and a stronger, more dynamic workforce for all.

COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS

Walden Savings Bank Making a Difference This Halloween

with the Blue Pumpkin Initiative

This Halloween, The Foundation for Abilities First is proud to support the Blue Pumpkin Initiative alongside Walden Savings Bank, now in its fifth year. This initiative helps raise awareness and foster understanding for children and young adults with autism and other developmental disabilities.

The blue pumpkin has become a powerful Halloween symbol, signaling that a child or young adult may have unique needs, such as limited eye contact, difficulty wearing a costume mask, or challenges with speech. Carrying a blue pumpkin subtly communicates to others that these individuals are here to enjoy Halloween in a way that respects their differences.

By joining together for the Blue Pumpkin Initiative, our community promotes inclusivity, making Halloween a safe and enjoyable celebration for everyone. We’re grateful to Walden Savings Bank and all who champion this initiative, creating a more understanding and accepting environment for all. If you're interested in a Foundation for Abilities First and Walden Savings Bank Blue Pumpkin bag, more are available at the Scotts Corner branch in Montgomery, NY.

Shining a Light on Our Volunteers: Introducing Jana Fezza!

In our first Volunteer Spotlight, we’re excited to introduce Jana Fezza, a dedicated volunteer whose passion for supporting people with disabilities and 20 years of experience in legal office management make her an invaluable part of our team.

Jana’s background includes managing offices at firms in White Plains and New York, with expertise in leadership, the ADA, and mental health first aid. Her connection with the Foundation for Abilities First Board Member & Chair Josh Mackey, inspired her to join Abilities First, where she enjoys meeting both our team and those we support. “Helping others and seeing them thrive is what I love most,” she shares.

Jana’s commitment strengthens community ties and fosters compassion and advocacy. We’re grateful for her dedication and look forward to the impact she’ll continue to make!
