WHAT'S HAPPENING AT PHUMC?

It's Socktoberfest once again! This month we are collecting new pairs of socks for distribution to different ministry partners. You can drop them off at the Welcome Desk or the Donation Station outside of Entrance 9.

If you have any questions, contact Rev. Katye Chambers at kchambers@phumc.com.

This Sunday, October 12, we will celebrate Legacy Sunday as part of our This Place Matters Capital Campaign. During worship, all will be encouraged to bring forward their pledge cards. If you have already made your pledge, thank you! We will have prayer cards in the bulletin you can bring forward. You don’t have to wait until Legacy Sunday to turn in your pledge—cards may be brought to the Welcome Desk, mailed to the church, or completed online at phumc.com/this-place-matters.

Everyone is welcome to join us as we pack care bags for those in need in our community! If you don't have a Sunday School class, this is a great opportunity for you to meet other members of our church and make connections! We are also looking for Sunday School classes, groups, or individuals to contribute $250 to help cover the purchase of the supplies needed for care bags.

To provide financial support for this program or learn more, contact Rev. Katye Chambers at kchambers@phumc.com.

October 15th is Pregnancy and Infancy Loss Remembrance Day. We know that a great many people are affected by the heartbreak of pregnancy and infant loss, and that the grief from this is complex and isolating. On October 15th, our chapel will be open from 6am-6pm for those that want to come pray. We will have a votive station where individuals can light a candle for their child(ren) as well as a prayer card with guided prayers and resources. We hope all will be in prayer for those grieving this day.

Are you craving a place where you can connect, worship, and grow in your faith? Join us for a Young Adult (18-40) Night on Thursday, October 16 at 6:00pm at the church where we will spend time in worship and share in a meal together. The cost of the meal at the event is $10. Pay when making a registration or pay day of! However, please don't worry if you're unable to contribute—your participation is what's most important to us! Rev. Brittany Watson from First United Methodist Church Little Rock will be preaching!

Don’t miss out on this incredible opportunity to connect with your church and engage in meaningful conversations - we had a blast last fall! RSVP at phumc.com/yam. Childcare will be provided for Pre-K and under! Reach out to mmcmurray@phumc.com to pre-register your child(ren).

Dr. Robbins is releasing a book, titled "I Love to Tell the Story." The book will release on Sunday, October 19! We'll have a book signing and release party from 3:00-5:00pm in the Argue Great Hall. Dr. Robbins will discuss his writing process and sign copies for the public. You won't want to miss it!

You will be able to purchase the book at the release party, online starting October 19, or by calling the church office at 501-664-3600.

In May and June of 2025, PHUMC staff member, Karen Clark, did a solo trip to Rwanda to teach music to children in poorly-resourced schools. She also brought lesson plans and trained the teachers. You are invited to hear about Karen’s project on Sunday morning, October 19 during the Sunday School hour in Argue Great Hall (the Gym). If your class can’t make it for this, and you are interested in hearing more, please email Karen at kclark@phumc.com.

Please join us Sunday, October 19th at 5:00pm in Wesley Hall for a powerful screening of "1946: The Mistranslation That Shifted Culture." This is a feature documentary that investigates the 1946 creation of the Revised Standard Version (RSV) of the Bible, the translation choices in it that led to anti-LGBTQ bias, and their impact in the church and society. Dinner and childcare will be provided.

IN THE COMMUNITY

Howard Thurman & The Sacred Call

October 17-18, at St. Margaret's Episcopal Church

As a mystic, theologian, and author of several books, Howard Thurman (1899-1981) believed everyone possessed a call and role in the restoration of God’s beloved creation. Described as the spiritual architect of the Civil Rights Movement, Dr. Thurman advised Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and many other sacred activists. He felt called to work that would serve all people and to use the contemplative experience as a path to peace, purpose, empowerment, and oneness. Howard Thurman wrote about this desire in many books, most notably, Jesus and the Disinherited, one that Dr. King carried with him whenever he marched. During this workshop/retreat, we will journey through the life and work of this great sage and look within to learn and reflect on what God is inviting now.

Questions? Contact Rev. Katye Chambers at kchambers@phumc.com.

Come ready to serve and make a new friend from a different religion! Lunch will be provided.
