Senior Living Ushers in Luxury Amenities
A paradigm shift in what is considered a luxury offering versus an expectation is necessary for housing providers to beat the national 90% occupancy rate.
It’s no surprise to industry insiders that the senior housing market is highly competitive. Today’s newest Baby Boomers increasingly desire a lifestyle defined by their interests and activities. In order to attract new residents, a paradigm shift in what is considered a luxury offering versus an expectation is necessary for housing providers to beat the national 90% occupancy average.

One way to attract today’s seniors is to provide unique - or at least distinctive amenities. Some assisted living sites are ideally located near a bustling urban epicenter or natural attractions such as national parks making resident’s access to shops, restaurants and activities relatively easy.

However, operators without this inherent competitive edge are learning that they need to build them into their housing concept in order to compete. In Portland, Oregon, 12th and Burnside is a senior housing development located miles outside downtown. To make up for the lack of amenities, they developed their own retail space complete with cafe’s, courtyard and interior spaces for residents to pursue hobbies such as woodworking, crafts and the arts.

Today’s seniors want to continue leading active, engaged lives, and hospitality-oriented offerings such as theatre rooms, spas, and community gaming centers are becoming more an expectation than a luxury.

Importance of Keeping Active
Winter is in full swing and the urge to hibernate is at its strongest, especially for our senior loved ones. It may feel safer to encourage them to stay inside and take it easy, but in reality, motivating your loved one to stay active during this season is the best thing you can do for them. Here’s why:

Staying active reduces depression. Endorphins, the ‘feel good’ chemical the brain releases during physical activity, also makes us feel happier and more content. Recent research studies have also concluded that, especially in seniors, exercise can dramatically increase mood and self-satisfaction, fending off the seasonal blues.

Staying active decreases falls.  It’s proven that exercise has a plethora of benefits for seniors, such as strengthening the core and extremities as well as improving balance, flexibility and endurance. All of these physical benefits can help prevent frailty that often causes falls.

Staying active increases social networks. Maintaining and even growing social networks is important for seniors because it offers companionship, support and encouragement. Group exercise programs are not only physically beneficial but also help seniors stay connected and nurture those relationships.

Staying active increases cognitive health. Activities such as yoga, dancing or the popular tai chi require memorization and coordination skills which help fight dementia by keeping the mind working as well as the body.

If your loved one has mobility issues, even a quick stroll outside will liven up their mood and keep them moving.

Roller Derby Grandpa Keeps on Rollin’
Merby Dick wears the number 70 on his competition jersey to denote the age he started playing roller derby.

Merby is the only founding member left on his team, The Lane County Concussions of Eugen, Oregon. He first tried roller sports decades earlier with roller hockey. But later in life, when his two grandchildren started playing roller derby he thought he’d give it a try. Today, at 77, he is still going strong.

Roller Derby is a fast paced, full contact sport that requires a significant amount of training to stay in shape. Players must stay on roller skaters for the duration of each game and often use full-force hits to try and knock opponents down.

Despite the intensity of the game, Merby is a central figure in
men's competitive roller derby who doesn't let his age keep him on the sidelines. "I've got lots of energy, I'm having fun," he told the University of Oregon, adding that he joined the sport "because it looked like fun."
