Central Rappahannock Heritage Center

Newsletter

A place that loses its history loses its soul.

Message From The Chairperson

Spring has sprung, and along with the beautiful spring flowers, IDEAS are blooming at the Heritage Center. While we are always interested in expanding our collections, we also are entrusted to make our collections accessible and useful. We have a team of volunteers who regularly process items that have come in, sorting, cataloging, and ensuring that these items are properly stored and cared for. We also have volunteers who lead the work at the Center in critical administrative and support roles. But I’m looking for yet another volunteer… maybe it’s you? Or someone you know! We’ve got an idea floating that will be exceptionally helpful but it needs a LEADER. Unlike our weekly volunteer work, this can be done much on one’s own time, working with a team who will also be doing solo work. Are you a retired Project Manager? Administrative Assistant? Or do you have those same skills? Please reach out to me directly if you think you might be the one.

Other things our volunteers and Board will be up to as the weather warms up will be taking the Center OUT to the Community. As we did last summer, we will be at Hurkamp Park monthly at the Farmers Market with some samples from our collections and letting the Community know who we are and what we do. As well, we are ramping up a talk that can go to other clubs and organizations who are looking for a speaker. Let us know if you are interested in participating, or if you are with a group or organization looking to learn more about the Heritage Center and the history of our area.

Cheers!

Chairperson

Meet Carol G. Walker, Ph.D.

I am delighted to be a member of the Board of the Central Rappahannock Heritage Center. As a volunteer in the Center on Thursday afternoons, I have enjoyed working with the historic documents as well as having learned more about my home town of Fredericksburg and its citizens.

Being a Fredericksburg native, I went to Lafayette Elementary School which is now the Fredericksburg Library on Caroline Street. Maury School was where I attended 7th Grade. Graham Morris had me referee girls’ basketball games in the Maury gym which now serves as home to the Heritage Center. I attended James Monroe High School for 8th – 12th grades. My early years of schooling were all local in Fredericksburg and I am thankful for the foundational education I received here.

I have always been a teacher and educator. I hold a Ph.D. in Education from The Union Institute and University, a M.Ed. in Educational Administration and Supervision from Virginia State University, and a B.S. in Elementary Education from Radford University. I have taught students at all levels including Pre-K through doctoral candidates, online as well as in person. Most of my career has been related to university administration. After my retirement in 2019, I came

home to Fredericksburg.

My two sons and two grandchildren live in Baltimore. I see them often and enjoy watching the little ones grow. It is good to be back home and I am honored to be an active member of several community organizations including the Central Rappahannock Heritage Center.
