ConTex and UTSA Honored With Prestigious APLU Award |

In recognition for innovative and impactful efforts to advance global research on campus and with partners, on November 14, 2023, ConTex and UTSA received the “APLU International Impact Award for Global Research.”
ConTex Awardees include 74 institutions of higher education and research centers in Mexico and 13 UT System institutions in Texas. UT System and Conahcyt have committed over $20 million dollars to the ConTex grants and scholarships programs over the past seven years.

This fall, Biomedical Engineering scholar Pedro Emmanuel Rocha Flores successfully defended his dissertation, earning a Ph.D. from The University of Texas at Dallas. Supervised by Dr. Walter E. Voit, Dr. Rocha Flores's research explored methods for recovery from spinal injuries.
Dr. Rocha Flores's dissertation, titled Development of Softening and Electrically Stable Multi-Electrode Array for Functional Recovery After Spinal Cord Injury, examines the potential of electrode leads smaller and more flexible than existing options that could be used to help restore movement after injury to the spine.

Gonzalo Hugo Favela Camacho, a Ph.D. student in Teaching, Learning and Culture at the University of Texas at El Paso, successfully defended his dissertation this fall. Dr. Favela Camacho's research, advised by Dr. Char Ullman, focused on the differences and similarities in the experiences of non-native English speaking teachers (NNESTs) and native English speaking teachers (NESTs).
In conducting his dissertation research, entitled Non-native English-speaking Teachers'(NNESTs') Identities and Ideologies on the U.S.-Mexico Border: A Case Study, Dr. Favela Camacho was struck by the prevalence of a stereotype regarding who should be an English teacher or what a native English speaker should look like. He realized that there is a general preconceived idea that this person should be of Anglo-Saxon origin, with white skin and light eyes. However, not all individuals with these characteristics are the best qualified to teach English, and Dr. Favela Camacho emphasizes that it is one thing to know English and another to know how to teach it.

En reconocimiento a sus iniciativas innovadoras y de alto impacto enfocadas a promover la investigación a nivel mundial, tanto internamente como con colaboradores, el 14 de noviembre de 2023, ConTex y UTSA recibieron el "Premio de Impacto Internacional APLU por Investigación Global."
Los ganadores de las becas de investigación de ConTex incluyen 74 instituciones de educación superior y centros de investigación en México y 13 instituciones del Sistema de UT en Texas. En los últimos siete años, el Sistema de la Universidad de Texas y Conahcyt han asignado más de $20 millones de dólares a los programas de becas de ConTex.

Este otoño el estudiante de Ingeniería Biomédica, Pedro Emmanuel Rocha Flores, defendió con éxito su tesis doctoral en la Universidad de Texas en Dallas. Bajo la supervisión del Dr. Walter E. Voit, la investigación del Dr. Rocha Flores exploró métodos para el tratamiento de lesiones de la médula espinal.
La tesis del Dr. Rocha Flores, titulada Development of Softening and Electrically Stable Multi-Electrode Array for Functional Recovery After Spinal Cord Injury, examina el potencial de electrodos más pequeños y flexibles de los que se encuentran disponibles actualmente para ayudar a restaurar el movimiento del paciente tras una lesión medular.

Gonzalo Hugo Favela Camacho, estudiante del Doctorado en Enseñanza, Aprendizaje y Cultura en la Universidad de Texas en El Paso, defendió con éxito su tesis este otoño. La investigación del Dr. Favela Camacho, asesorado por la Dra. Char Ullman, se centró en las diferencias y similitudes en las experiencias de los profesores no nativos (NNEST) y los profesores nativos de habla inglesa (NEST).
Al realizar la investigación para su disertación, titulada Non-native English-speaking Teachers’(NNESTs') Identities and Ideologies on the U.S.-Mexico Border: A Case Study, al Dr. Favela Camacho le llamó la atención la prevalencia de un estereotipo respecto a quién debería ser profesor de inglés o cual es la aparencia de un hablante nativo de inglés. Se dio cuenta de que en general existe la idea preconcebida de que esta persona debe ser de origen anglosajón, de piel blanca y ojos claros. Sin embargo, no todos los individuos con estas características son los mejor calificados para la enseñanza del inglés, por lo que el Dr. Favela Camacho hace hincapié en que una cosa es saber inglés y otra saber enseñarlo.
