In a landmark rule change by the Arizona Supreme Court, Arizona became the first state to eliminate the century-old practice of peremptory juror challenges. Peremptory challenges have been utilized by litigating attorneys to attempt to strike jurors which were felt to be detrimental to their client’s case.
Supporters say it is a move designed to combat systemic discrimination; however, there have been safeguards called Batson challenges. While this may streamline the trial process, it is important to find counsel that understands the change in the law to select the best jury for their client’s case.

Emergency cooling centers and water distribution areas were established throughout Maricopa County during the summer for those who do not have access to indoor cooling systems. Burg Simpson attorney Ronda Kelso, who is also a registered nurse, volunteered her time and provided food, water, and basic first aid to those who were suffering from heat exhaustion. Cooling centers in churches and community centers across the region serve as safe indoor environments where heat vulnerable residents can seek aid and refuge from extreme heat.
