My life as a studio artist can be both exciting and lonely at the same time.  Each day in the studio, I create a new work of art which soon goes off to its new owner or collector.

Few people see the progress in the studio, and few recipients of the art know the process by which the art developed.
With this new monthly newsletter, I will share the action and adventures of Byrdcall Studio-my backyard studio in Woodbine, Maryland.

This is my way of bringing you into the studio on occasion while you sip your morning coffee at the computer.

Some of you have been on my seldom-used emailing list forever.  Some of you have signed up to be notified of upcoming classes I teach or shows I attend.  I trust that since you once expressed interest in communicating with me, you may still be curious to see my artful process in action.

If not, please opt out using the "SafeUnsubscribe" button below or the "Unsubscribe" link above provided by the Constant Contact people.

I hope to keep my postings interesting enough that you look forward to them each month...a peek into an artist's studio.   If you want to share these newsletter with a friend, great!
I will post my work in progress, techniques, upcoming shows, classes, sketches, paintings, and new woodcut prints before anyone else sees them.  Let me know what you'd like to see more of.  For me, it's about sharing art, not selling art.

By making this a conversational newsletter, I will enjoy your virtual company at my side in the Studio.

Studio Action for March - April

Four friends are learning the art of rya rug making at Byrdcall Studio this month as I teach what may be the last rya class I can teach.  The backings are a critical part of the craft, and they have become very scarce these days.  Follow the progress of these new rug designers.  Watch for photos of their completed rugs in coming newsletters.

This class is being video-documented by Ken Koons of the Carroll County Times for posterity through their "Hand-Crafted Traditions" series.

This month, I am also creating wall art for my very favorite supplier of beer-making and winemaking supplies:  Maryland Homebrew in Columbia, MD.  Here is a 3' x 4' acrylics painting which is now hanging in the entance lobby.  I have several more paintings to do this spring and summer... stay tuned, or better yet, check out Maryland Homebrew.

Diploma Design

I have hand-printed the diplomas for The Philadelphia School for the past two years.  This year, they have commissioned me to design a logo-inspired linocut which will be their diploma design for the coming three years or more.  Below is the first print from the carved block which now needs a bit of tweaking before I print for the graduating class.

Lots more action in the studio...stay tuned.

Classes?  I'd like to offer a few classes or workshops this summer.  Let me know if you would be interested in Print-making, Drawing from Nature, Glass Painting, or Floorcloth-making.  I'll offer what has the greatest response.
