Amended Community Eligibility Provision Expands Free Meal Access to High-Poverty Schools
The Community Eligibility Provision is an option for schools to offer meals at no cost to all enrolled students without collecting household information through applications. Currently, to be eligible, schools must meet or exceed the established, minimum identified student percentage (ISP) of 40%. The amendment goes into effect on October 23, 2023 and lowers the minimum ISP to 25%. As a result, more schools will be eligible for no-cost school meals, eliminating unpaid meal charges, and much more.

Journal of School Health Articles Highlight CDC Research on Evidence-based Strategies for School Nutrition and Physical Activity
In this special open access issue of the Journal of School Health, the CDC draws on the last 10 years of research to identify evidence-based strategies schools can use to improve student and staff nutrition and physical activity knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors. The strategies span across eight areas that have proven to be most critical:
(1) school nutrition,
(2) physical education and physical activity,
(3) health education,
(4) school environment and physical and social-emotional well-being,
(5) out-of-school time,
(6) family and community engagement,
(7) school employee health and well-being, and
(8) a coordinated school health approach.
In these articles, the CDC identified low- and no-cost interventions for US schools to maximize every student's potential for health and academic achievement.

HIP Plan Selection
When enrolling in the Healthy Indiana Plan (HIP), new members can choose between four managed care entities (MCEs): Anthem, CareSource, MDwise or MHS. If no health plan is chosen, one is assigned. Members stay with their health plan for that calendar year.
Annually, from November 1st – December 15th, members can switch their health plan for the upcoming calendar year by calling 877-GET-HIP-9. If a member wants to keep their health plan, they do not need to take any action.

Unwinding Updates
Indiana is one of few states providing data on disenrollments by race and ethnicity. A KFF brief analyzed the data and found that currently there are not large differences in disenrollment rates by race and ethnicity. In Indiana, there is a 31% disenrollment rate overall and the only group slightly over that mark is Black Hoosiers with a 33% disenrollment rate There are still concerns since the share of Hoosiers for whom race and ethnicity is unknown or not reported is 18%. It is important to continue to monitor disenrollment data and ensure outreach efforts are equitable.
