FSSA Announces $25 Million Grant to Address Working Hoosiers’ Child Care Needs
The Indiana Family and Social Services Administration’s Office of Early Childhood and Out-of-School Learning announced the Employer-Sponsored Child Care Fund, part of Gov. Eric J. Holcomb’s 2023 Next Level Agenda, to mobilize employers and communities to create or expand child care offerings that address the needs of working Hoosiers.
The $25 million program, a partnership with the Indiana Chamber of Commerce, uses a portion of the state’s remaining federal relief funds from the COVID-19 pandemic and is part of the state’s broader efforts to strengthen the early care and education sector, providing support for today’s workforce and investing in tomorrow’s.

How Smoking Affects Those with Asthma
Smoke is an environmental trigger for those who have asthma. Inhaling smoke, either directly by smoking tobacco yourself or indirectly from secondhand smoke, irritates the lungs. Tobacco smoke is most commonly discussed, but smoke from candles, wildfires, fireplaces, and incense can also irritate the lungs.
Smoke irritates the airways causing them to produce more mucus, but it also weakens tiny hairs called cilia. The cilia brush mucus and other irritants from the airways, so when they are weakened, mucus and other irritants settle in the lungs exacerbating asthma symptoms.
The Asthma and Allergy Network recommends that you remove yourself from areas where people smoke and don’t let people smoke in your home or car. If you have young children, enroll them in a smoke-free daycare.

Investing in a Strong Primary Care Health System: An Overview of CMMI’s Making Care Primary Model
High-quality primary care is foundational to providing “whole person care” that emphasizes prevention, as well as team-based and relationship-based care. To help improve primary care, the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation (CMMI) has developed and tested several multi-payer advanced primary care models over the last several years. Earlier this year, CMMI announced another opportunity for providers and payers to participate in an innovative primary care model. The new Making Care Primary (MCP) model seeks to support the delivery of high-quality, advanced primary care services, prioritize meeting both the medical and nonmedical needs of patients, advance health equity, and address fragmentation throughout the health care system. CMMI is accepting applications for the MCP model through November 30, 2023, with the new model slated to launch on July 1, 2024.
In a new webinar, Manatt Health and CMMI will share an in-depth look at the MCP model, including objectives, requirements and participation options. Click here to register for the free webinar.
