Meet Kaleb and Max
How many of you could stand in front of 2,000+ community leaders, over 11 nights and give a memorized presentation, without fail? And, by the way, how many of you could do this at only eight years old? Meet Max & Kaleb... these Cub Scouts have already conquered a fear that today, many American's face. Time and time again we see surveys stating that the fear of public speaking ranks as #1 among adults, but these 8-year olds aren't afraid. If you attended a Golden Eagle event this year, you would have seen them. Or, if you caught one of our Scouting for Food PSA's last fall, you saw Max there too. You can check it out here. Public Speaking is just one of the many merit badges these young men will have the chance to earn as they get older and engaged in the Boy Scout program. But as of now, Max & Kaleb are well beyond their years in public speaking practices. When asked if they enjoyed getting up in front of all those people, they both replied with a humble "yes." And, when asked if they'd be willing to do it again... a much more excited "YES!" from each of them. Thanks, Max & Kaleb, for making our Golden Eagle events extra special this year!! |

When you give to Scouting, you help make heroes...
When you give to Scouting, you help make heroes...
Will Brabb, a Webelos Scout from Pack 507 in Lake Mary, enjoys volunteering at the Sanford Civic Center to help feed the homeless. At 10-years-old, he was amazed to see classmates from his school there to receive help. He says he "really wants to help a lot of people."
Jarrett Slade, a First Class Scout with Troop 54 in Holly Hill, has been awarded the BSA Lifesaving Award for heroism. Not too long after earning the First Aid Merit Badge, Jarrett walked into his home and recognized his father was showing signs of a heart attack or a stroke. He immediately called 911 and took his father's blood pressure, relaying the information to the 911 operator. He also helped explain to the fire fighter's his father's medical history. His father was having a heart attack, but survived thanks to his sons' quick actions.
We need your support to help us make more heroes like Will & Jarrett! It's not too late to pledge your gift and help us!
Go online to http://support.cflscouting.org to help make a hero ... My Pledge to Making Heroes
On behalf of the over 25,000 Scouts here in Central Florida, thank you for being a part of this important campaign!! Thank you for making heroes!!

Council Recognition Banquet a Success
On Tuesday, June 6th, 888 scouts, scouters, and family members gathered at the Buena Vista Palace Hotel and Convention Center for the annual Council Recognition Banquet. They recognized 448 Eagle Scouts from the Centennial class of 2012, 14 new Silver Beaver Award recipients, 4 National Outstanding Eagle Scout Award holders, the outstanding Eagle Scout projects, Outstanding Commissioners, Venturing Silver Award recipients, and were wrapped in the stories of Col. Joe Kittinger who was the Guest of Honor, as he told the story of the Red Bull Stratos skydive - the highest parachute jump ever recorded (which broke the record the Colonel set in 1960). As one observer put it, "There were Eagle Scouts wrapped around the entire room which was an awesome sight ... I wish those parents that have boys of scout age or younger could have been there last night. Scouting is Alive and Well in Central Florida thanks to incredible volunteers, supportive parents, and outstanding young men and women." If you missed this year's banquet, make your plans to make the 2014 banquet - you won't want to miss it again.

A Tribute to Past Council President Bill Sublette
The past few months have been extremely challenging as the leadership of the Boy Scouts of America carefully considered amendments to the BSA Membership Policy. There is an old Professional Scouters adage which suggests to "always place a volunteer between you and a controversy." I have been blessed for the past two years to have Bill Sublette as our Council President. Bill has successfully guided us through probably the most difficult challenge the BSA has ever faced. His thoughtful leadership has also provided a steady hand guiding me and our entire board through a very uncertain economic time. Many of you know Bill also serves as the Board Chair of Orange County Public Schools, the tenth largest school district in the nation. It is a tribute to his management and leadership to skillfully balance both of these demanding responsibilities, while at the same time sustaining his law practice and his highest priority of being a loving husband and father. It's takes tremendous dedication to lead the Boy Scout Board which is compromised of 85 members, but throughout his tenure Bill never missed a single board meeting and was always available to advance the Scouting mission.
Bill has often attributed his successes in life to the skills he learned as a Scout growing up. Bill's service to youth in Scouting and our school system is one of the greatest examples of "paying it forward" that I have ever witnessed in my professional career.
I want to acknowledge is lovely wife, Suzie, for the many nights Bill had to be away from home to attend a Boy Scout meeting or event. I appreciate your understanding and supporting Bill's passion for Scouting. During Bill's final remarks at the June 4th Annual Meeting, he highlighted a list of accomplishments he was most proud of that we achieved during his tenure. Most notable being the councils achievement of the Journey to Excellence Gold Award, earned for successfully delivering one of the most exceptional Scouting programs in America today; being a good steward of our limited resources; and confirming a major gift to construct a new pool at The Brown & Brown Aquatics Center at the Leonard & Marjorie Williams Scout Reservation.
So Bill, thank you for being a friend, coach and counselor. I am deeply grateful; please accept my sincerest personal appreciation for your leadership and friendship.
Yours in Scouting,
Ron Oats

Northern Tier - Bissett, Manitoba - Canada
Northern Tier provides epic wilderness canoeing trips in remote Manitoba Canada. Trips feature a float plane ride, unsurpassed freshwater fishing and hundreds of thousands of acres of virgin wilderness to explore. This is one trip that will change your life.
Every summer, hundreds of Scouts head to the most remote Boy Scout High Adventure base for a once in a lifetime wilderness canoeing expedition. Trips begin by meeting your "Interpreter" who is a trained Northern Tier staff member that will accompany you on your trip. Northern Tier provides full outfitting for your trek. A float plane ride to the canoe cache begins your trip. After that, you can decide which of the less traveled trails you want to follow. Crews typically paddle a mixture of lakes and rivers. It is common for crews in Bissett not to see anyone other than their crew for their entire trip. There are also lots of fish to catch. After your trip, you will return by float plane to the base to enjoy a cleansing sauna.
"Scouts experience a phenomenal wilderness area. I have seen loons, beavers, otters, deer, moose, bald eagles, and more. Brilliant starry nights, Northern Lights, thunderstorms, and picture perfect weather have their place on each voyage. The maturity and growth Scouts gain from pushing past their previously imagined limits is incredible. I can't speak highly enough of this program; it has changed my life."
- Past Participant - Northern Tier
Bissett has been called the most extreme adventure the BSA offers. Come to Bissett and experience "Wilderness Adventures that Last a Lifetime!"

Letter to all Cubmasters
Dear Central Florida Cubmasters, For the 2013 Cub Scout Fall Recruitment Campaign our goal is to help your Pack plan and execute an effective promotional plan that will reach families in your community and get them to join your Pack. The goal is to make sure all Packs in the Central Florida Council have a successful School Night Sign-Up this Fall. To this end, we are asking our Pack leaders to be directly involved with a "Get the Word Out" campaign, not just in your school, but in your neighborhoods and community. Here is what will happen at the Council and District level:
- The District Executive will arrange the School Night date with the elementary school.
- The Council support staff will produce a flyer to be distributed to each boy during classroom presentations conducted by the District Executive one day prior to School Night for Scouting.
- A District School Night presenter will be assigned to each school.
- Billboards will be placed throughout Central Florida promoting Scout Sign-Up.
- Radio spots promoting "Join Cub Scouts".
- BeAScout.org - make sure your pin is updated, including your School Night date, time and location.
Here is what we need from you:
- Attend your District's New Scout Recruitment Training; you will be emailed the date, time and location of your training in just a couple of weeks. At the training, you will receive a "Pack Marketing Plan"; a list of key task and tools to help your Pack maximize your School Night promotions. Please invite two other leaders to join you for the training; your point person for School Night Sign-Up and someone who can spearhead the marketing plan for your Pack's School Night. Also, please be thinking about a goal that you want your Pack to set for "number of new Scouts recruited".

Mountain Biking Option to Be Added to Cycling Merit Badge You talked, and we listened! Thanks to the requests of many Scouts who have been requesting a tweak to the Cycling merit badge, we have added a mountain biking option to the requirements. Now, Scouts can choose to complete their Cycling merit badge with either the road bike option or the mountain bike option. The patch remains the same, but the requirements and the pamphlet will look different.
The merit badge pamphlet should be ready in time for July summer camps and plans. |

New Council Popcorn Kernel
The Central Florida Council is proud to announce Jodi Peterman has agreed to serve as the 2013 Popcorn Kernel. She is the proud mom to three sons and a daughter, who feature one Eagle Scout, two Life Scouts, three former Venturers and one future Venturer!
Jodi is a leader in Troop and Crew 192, chartered by the First United Methodist Church of St. Cloud in the Osceola District. She servesas the Fundraising Chair for both units.
She leads the Troop's fundraising efforts with an eye on the goal and lots of positive communication, meeting one on one with every family in the Troop during the popcorn and discount card campaigns.
Thanks to her leadership, the Troop sold more than $20,000 in popcorn last fall. (Wow, right?) So, what's the secret to their success? Troop 192 was highlighted at the 2013 All Hands Summit in March. Check it out here: Troop 192 - how'd they do it?
Jodi looks forward to working with our District and Unit Kernels to ensure success during the "2013 Popcorn = Program" Campaign. As she says in the video, "we provide our Scouts the opportunity to go on trips like Philmont and the National Jamboree." Jodi knows it's all about the youth and their program.
As you enjoy your summer, here are a couple of tips from Jodi and the popcorn team:
- Be sure your unit is planning out their next year
- Figure out all the awesome activities your youth want to do
- Come up with a unit budget
- Make sure your unit is committed to program, by signing your unit up for popcorn. You can do that here: Popcorn Website
- Attend your District's Popcorn Kickoff in July!
- Ensure that during this next popcorn season... it's all about the program!

ScoutParent Program to end July 1st
As part of our ongoing efforts to strengthen the protection of youth in our programs, the designation of parents of youth members in traditional programs as ScoutParents will end effective July 1. BSA literature, forms, and processes are being revised to match this change in program.
ScoutParents are now encouraged to officially register as dues-paying adult volunteers or leaders if they are not already so registered.
To help facilitate this, the unit Scouter Reserve position (91U) has been created for supportive adults who have no immediate specific leadership role. Like all registered BSA adult positions, this new role will require a criminal background check and the completion of Youth Protection training.
The position of unit ScoutParent coordinator (PC) will remain a registered position with the name changed to parent coordinator.

Boy Scouts of America's 2013 National Jamboree, July 15-24, 2013
What is the national jamboree? Imagine 50,000 Scouts, Venturers, volunteers, and staff from all over the country, all gathered together for one big celebration of Scouting. Over 10 days, there are exhibits, stadium shows with entertainment, opportunities to work on merit badges - there's something for everybody.
Staff Needed! The 2013 National Jamboree is still looking for several thousand volunteers to help staff the event. If you or a fellow adult leader are available to help provide these once in a lifetime experiences for our Scouts please click here to get started in being on Staff for the 2013 National Jamboree.
High adventure like you've never seen. Whitewater, climbing, zip lines, mountain biking, and much, much more. (Not to mention all of the things you've grown to love about the jamboree: patch trading, SCUBA, stadium shows, Technology Quest ... who could ask for more?)
History created by you. This will be the first jamboree at its new permanent home - The Summit, in beautiful West Virginia - and you'll be there for the grand opening.

What's Going Around: Bronchitis

Coughing? Just exhausted? Sore or tight chest? Then you may have What's Going Around -- Bronchitis.
Centra Care physicians have seen increases in Bronchitis patients all around Central Florida. Specifically, cases at the Winter Garden Village and Lee Road locations were both up 500% or more and the Conway Centra Care location was up 350%.
Learn More: Bronchitis is inflammation of the large air passages in the lungs. Symptoms of bronchitis include a dry cough that develops into a cough with mucus, wheezing, fatigue, chest tightness and a mild fever. Typically, acute bronchitis develops from colds and other upper respiratory infections. Chronic bronchitis is most often a result of smoking or other pollutants.
Acute bronchitis is contagious so washing your hands and keeping them away from your face is an important step in prevention.
Bronchitis usually goes away on its own in about a week, but if your symptoms worsen, you have shortness of breath, or a fever that lasts more than four or five days, head to Centra Care or contact your physician.
If you suspect you have bronchitis there are some things you can do at home to lessen the severity of symptoms:
- Over the counter medications can help pain, fever and cough
- A humidifier can help break up mucus
- Drink lots of fluids
- Get plenty of rest
- Keep away from tobacco smoke
Did you know ... Centra Care offers discounted physicals for Scouts and Leaders? Scout physicals are available for $25 and Leader physicals are only $40. Check with your local Centra Care for your next annual physical.

From the Council Commissioner
Greetings, Central Florida Scouter's and Scouts. Well, summer is here and units are off and running to do all of those wonderful things that Scouting has to offer over the summer. I hope many of you have chosen Camp La-No-Che for your summer camp adventure as our camp has many awesome activities to offer; Alpine climbing, ATV's, PWC's, (4 wheelers and jet skis), a full range of aquatic activities, merit badges, native American area and events, etc. If not our camp, then hopefully a long term summer camp somewhere! We also have a large Council contingent (7 Troops, 1 Crew) headed off to the 2013 National Jamboree at the Summit in West Virginia, as well as other High Adventure facilities and events. As you are all probably well aware of by now, the BSA National Membership Standard policy that has attracted so much attention for the past 6 months is behind us and Scouting is moving forward. We need to be more focused now than ever before to ensure we bring the Scouting program to as many youth as possible because it is so vitally important to help our young men, and women, to be "Prepared for Life" by having the skills necessary to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Scout Law. This is our goal, and I ask each and every one of you to help me, starting today, to grow our movement. Be ever vigilant to look for youth who are not part of the Scouting program and let's make them part of it! Have a great summer, have fun, stay safe and I'll see you on the high ground. Yours in Scouting,
Robert "Bo" Terry Council Commissioner
