FROM THE PRESIDENT AND CEO
Dear Friends,

I hope that you and your loved ones are healthy and staying safe during this unimaginable time.

Thanks to partners like you, the Detroit Public Schools Foundation team continues assisting DPSCD students, families, educators and leadership. Although it is not quite business as usual, we continue standing in the gaps where needed. Our students are priority one!

As you may know, the District has been laser-focused on providing breakfast and lunch to students (even those homebound) and is working on a solution that will ensure our children are resourced to learn from home. Dr. Vitti’s leadership has been unmatched as he has been forward-thinking, proactive and a respected voice to Lansing legislators, community leaders, parents and our valued educators.

Detroit is strong and will survive these unprecedented times. I look forward to seeing (and hugging) you all again and in the meantime, continue to encourage and care for one another.

Humbled and grateful,
Pamela J. Moore
President and CEO
DPSCD NEWS
DPSCD is taking care of families by utilizing 19 schools as food and academic packet distribution sites on Mondays and Thursdays from 8 am - 1 pm. Starting Monday, April 20, there will be an additional 32 sites just for academic packet distribition. There are many online resources available to students when they log-in through their existing Clever account, including iReady, Khan Academy, and MyON. All this information, as well as District updates and additional resources, can be found at detroitk12.org/covid19 . From a recent letter to DPSCD Families from Dr. Vitti on April 3rd, “As you may have heard, the Governor suspended school for the rest of the school year. However, learning will still take place for DPSCD students. Beginning Tuesday, April 14th, after Spring Break, the district will release new learning materials and assignments for grades PreK-12 in the subjects of reading, math, science and social studies. The materials and assignments will come from the materials students were already using this year. Our teachers will be reaching out to you and students that week to support their learning. This will be done through phone calls and online interaction tools. We will also print the learning materials for you and will provide additional information to you about pick up locations if you do not have a reliable device or internet access at home or just prefer printed materials.” To read the whole letter, click here .

The Family and Community Engagement (FACE) department is working to provide virtual Parent Academy workshops. So far, they have hosted 2 interactive “Parent 2 Parent” conference calls to network parents together, listen to needs and concerns, and provide answers to questions.

SCHOLARSHIPS AND RANDOLPH ASSISTANCE PROGRAMS
Our Graduates Show Fortitude!

The Detroit Public Schools Foundation proudly supports the Detroit Public Schools Community District Class of 2020! More than 140 seniors applied for Detroit College Promise scholarships via the online application (now closed). Our future scholars were diligent in getting required documents and pushing through the process even though COVID-19 interrupted all normalcy. Our seniors persevered, as many completed the multi-step application without excuses or complaints. In four years of curating scholarships, we are beyond elated by the tenacity of this cohort of scholars.

Additionally, the Randolph Assistance Program, sponsored by the Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter 9-Detroit, the Homebuilders Association of Southeastern Michigan / The Charitable and Educational Foundation and Carhartt, is available to Randolph Career and Technical Center graduates. The Awardees are determined by the school.

The Chalkbeat Article by Kayln Belsha, entitled For first-generation students, getting to college is hard as it is. Now add in coronavirus. describes the challenges of many of our graduating seniors . click here to read the article.

These are challenging times. However, thanks to donors like you, the Detroit Public Schools Foundation assures the Class of 2020 that their scholarships are secured and guaranteed.
