Dear Friends,

We hope you and your families are having a wonderful start to Spring! This month, we are happy to put a spotlight on the Miami Transplant Institute (MTI) – a great point of pride for Jackson Health System. MTI offers life-saving transplant, support, and rehabilitation programs to children and adults facing organ failure—backed by the world-class resources from Jackson and the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. We’re excited for you to learn more about the compassionate, skilled, and experienced care the MTI team provides in this edition of our newsletter.

In addition, we are counting down the final days leading up to our annual Golden Angels Gala in April, one of the most glamorous and anticipated social events of the season. We are grateful to our Golden Angels who have raised millions to support Jackson’s mission and generously host our gala each year.

We wish you all a beautiful spring, and look forward to seeing you soon.

All the best,
Charmaine Gatlin

Donor Spotlight:
Giving back time, talent, and treasure
Chely Schwartz received a liver transplant in 2019, the best gift of her lifetime. Per her own admission, she is proof of how miracles are made daily at Jackson. After a challenging post-transplant period, she is now on her way to recovery and has taken up candle-making as a hobby.

She knows from experience that transplant recipients are discouraged from having scented products, flowers, etc. around them during the initial post-transplant phase, which prompted her to create a scent-free candle that reveals the message “Miracles Happen” while burning. Partial proceeds of her “Angel Candle” benefit Miami Transplant Institute in gratitude to the incredible team that supports her in her journey.

The Winged Candle Company now sells unscented soy candles as well as non-chemically scented ones in fragrances like teakwood and brandied pear. Thank you, Chely, for devoting your time, talent and treasure to support Jackson Health Foundation and the Miami Transplant Institute.
Sexual Assault Awareness and
Prevention Month
Did you know April is Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month? We are proud to share that Jackson Health System’s Roxcy Bolton Rape Treatment Center (RTC) is the only comprehensive rape treatment center in Miami-Dade County. The RTC is also one of the few rape treatment centers nationwide to provide an all-inclusive approach to the care and treatment of sexual assault victims. RTC is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week to serve sexual assault victims and their non-offending family members. All services are free of charge and completely confidential.

The Christine E. Lynn Rehabilitation Center for The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis at UHealth Jackson Memorial
On Friday, March 25, our community gathered for a dedication celebrating Christine E. Lynn Rehabilitation Center for The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis at UHealth/Jackson Memorial. The dedication event recognized Lynn Rehabilitation Center’s outstanding teams, and their many contributions since the center’s opening in March of 2020. So far, Lynn Rehabilitation Center has provided world-class care to more than 3,300 patients. During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, the hospital also doubled as Jackson’s largest public vaccination location, helping to vaccinate tens of thousands against the virus.

During the March 25 ceremony, speakers and honorees included Christine E. Lynn, Carlos Migoya, Dr. Julio Frenk, Dr. David Gater, Dr. Barth Green and Marc Buoniconti. We thank all who were in attendance at this dedication for their contributions toward building a better future in Miami-Dade County.

More About The
Christine E. Lynn Rehabilitation Center
The $185 million facility received more than half its funding from the taxpayers of Miami-Dade County via the voter-approved Jackson Miracle-Building Bond Program. The project was also made possible by the unprecedented $25 million gift from founding benefactor Christine E. Lynn.

The Lynn Rehabilitation Center is designed to be one of the country’s most elite destinations for patients recovering from traumatic spinal and brain injuries, cancer treatment, and other complex conditions. The nine-story, 80-bed, acute rehabilitation hospital provides an array of inpatient and outpatient services for adults and children. Physicians, therapists, and other caregivers leverage The Miami Project’s leading research to deliver world-class treatment options.

The 260,000-square-foot facility features state-of-the-art amenities and next-generation technology, including a HydroWorx therapy pool. To prepare patients for maximizing their real-world mobility, the Lynn Rehabilitation Center also includes airplane seats, driving simulators, and a full-size car in the building to help provide real-life situations as part of the rehabilitation process.
