Dear Friends,

Happy New Year! We hope our first newsletter of the new year finds you and your families well.

As we reflect on the holiday season, we want to thank all of you who collected toys for our children at Jackson, as well as those who made a year-end gift. We also extend our sincere gratitude to those of you who gathered with us at the home of Jackson Health System CEO Carlos A. Migoya as a thank you for your generous support of Jackson throughout the pandemic. The future is bright at Jackson, and we hope you enjoyed learning more about our plans and how your support helps the health system fulfill its mission.

Since COVID-19 continues to be top of mind and an issue that continues to affect us all, our next Conversations in Care at noon on January 19 will feature Dr. Lilian Abbo, Jackson Health System’s associate chief medical officer for infectious diseases. Dr. Abbo, one of our community’s most trusted voices throughout the pandemic, will give an update on the virus in our community, how Jackson is handling the latest surge, and what you can do to stay safe. We invite you to join us and engage with our medical experts by asking questions and staying informed.

After careful consideration and discussions with medical advisers at Jackson Health System about the spread of COVID-19 in our community, we have decided to postpone the Golden Angels Gala planned for the end of this month. Please mark your calendars for the new date: April 22, 2022 at 7 p.m. at Soho Studios. The health and well-being of you and your families is our top priority. With that in mind, we felt it was the prudent decision to take this precaution and push back the date of this event. We look forward to celebrating with you in the spring.

Wishing you all the best for 2022,
Charmaine Gatlin

Donor Recognition
On December 9, Jackson Health System CEO Carlos A. Migoya opened his home to a group of philanthropists who have given so generously to Jackson during the pandemic. Each of these donors have made a tremendous impact on our fundraising efforts and we are so grateful for their support. We enjoyed spending time with you all and discussing the future of Jackson, upcoming projects and renovations, and how philanthropy plays a huge role in helping Jackson fulfill its mission.
Carlos A. Migoya, CEO of Jackson Health System, welcomed donors who supported Jackson during pandemic to his home on December 9 for a recognition dinner.
DATE CHANGE:
Golden Angels Gala
7 p.m. April 22, 2022, Soho Studios
To protect the health and well-being of you and your family, we are postponing the Golden Angels Gala until April 22. Though the date has been pushed back to spring, we will still celebrate the work and life of our very own Legends of Jackson. We will recognize the significant contributions some of our physicians have made to the community we serve.

This year has highlighted the importance of outstanding health care in South Florida, but the doctors being recognized at this year’s Golden Angels Gala have long exemplified the level of professionalism and compassion embraced at Jackson. Each one of them has touched the lives of many and gone above and beyond the call of duty. They are recognized by their peers as valuable colleagues and incredible mentors and their contributions to the health and well-being of their patients is heartfelt.

In the months leading up to the gala, we will highlight the doctors who we are honoring. These “legends” have a longstanding commitment to Jackson and our community, and are pioneers in their fields. They truly are remarkable in every way, and we look forward to celebrating them in April.

For more information on this year’s Golden Angels Gala, contact Beatriz Galan, Senior Director of Major Gifts, at [email protected].

Dr. Eduardo Bancalari

Dr. Eduardo Bancalari is the chief of the division of neonatology and newborn service at Holtz Children’s Hospital, and an Emeritus Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. He is consistently recognized both nationally and internationally for his expertise in and contributions to the fields of neonatology and perinatal medicine. During his career that has spanned over five decades, Dr. Bancalari has saved the lives of thousands of newborn babies – some born more than four months early, critically ill, weighing less than a pound. Dr. Bancalari’s tiny patients survive and thrive – often against all odds – because they are in his caring and capable hands. Every patient receives his undivided attention, and the way he reassures and calms worried parents is an art. Thousands of preemies born over the last 50 years in Miami-Dade County and beyond are alive because of him.

Miami Burn Center:
Helping Burn Patients Heal and Recover
for Five Decades
As South Florida’s only adult and pediatric Level I Verified Burn Center, the Miami Burn Center treats more than 600 patients a year from throughout Florida and the Caribbean. The dedicated teams of nurses and techs provide the extensive support burn patients need – all in one place.

As one of only five Florida centers certified by the American Burn Association and American College of Surgeons, we are the sole South Florida burn center with Level 1 verification for both adult and pediatric treatment. Every year, around 225 burn patients are admitted to Miami Burn Center, and Jackson manages nearly 400 more on an outpatient basis. Each patient’s entire course of treatment takes place in the burn center, which is located within the Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital.

Using leading burn treatment techniques, the work begins with initial resuscitation and wound evaluation, which determines whether patients are admitted to the intensive care unit or the non-critical burn care area or receive treatment as an outpatient. All patients receive wound care from surgeons or specially trained nurses.
Your generosity is what makes healing possible for thousands of families in Miami-Dade County and beyond. Take the next step and add your support to that of your friends and visionary donors. Through the Jackson Health Foundation, you may designate gifts to a specific program or fund, and donations can be made in honor or in memory of a friend
or loved one.
Experienced occupational and physical therapists in the specialized rehabilitation area work with both inpatients and outpatients. Simultaneously, a dedicated burn psychologist, which not all American Burn Association-verified centers have, provides the emotional and psychological support that many burn patients require. Finally, Jackson Health System takes pride in its role as an academic health center, which empowers teams to create clinical solutions for patients dealing with challenging burn injuries.
In 2017, a generous donation from Florida Power & Light (FPL) to Jackson Health Foundation helped unveil the Florida Power & Light Company Power to Care Jackson Memorial Hospital Burn Rehabilitation Therapy Unit.. The renovated unit features new therapy equipment including parallel bars, trampolines, and exercise equipment that is used to enhance treatment for patients.
Help Us Continue Fighting on the
Frontlines of the Pandemic
Like you, we thought 2022 would start differently. We were hoping for a fresh start, free of worrying about the rising number of COVID-19 cases, the newest strain of the virus, and when this pandemic will end. We all desperately want to return to our normal lives.

Our costs continue to rise on virtually everything: overtime, extra-shift bonuses, agency nurses, supplies, and shipping. We are used to being nimble with our dollars, but we will never compromise care to our patients, even as these additional costs strain the organization.

Jackson is our health system, your health system, and the community’s health system – the one place every Miami-Dade resident can count on for medical care. We will get through this disaster, but Jackson and its army of caregivers need your help today.

Please help Jackson by making a donation today. All contributions help us navigate this crisis and helps us get ready for what may come next. Thank you for your donation!
