| | Another successful HBCU tour + Prep & Promise program launched | | |
During winter break, MPDC completed its second annual HBCU tour along the eastern seaboard, bringing together 40 enthusiastic teens for an inspiring three-day journey. Boston sophomores, juniors, and seniors visited Morgan State, Delaware State, Howard University, Bowie State, and Lincoln University, getting a firsthand look at campus life, meeting admissions staff, and hearing directly from current students about academic programs and what HBCU life is really like.
Some students even had the opportunity to participate in a live radio broadcast at Bowie State. The group also visited the National Museum of African American History and Culture, where exhibits on history, culture, and resilience added powerful context to the college experience. And there was some well-deserved fun at Dave & Busters in Baltimore, too.
Many participants left with a clearer sense of what an HBCU could offer and a stronger sense of possibility for their futures.
A huge thank you to the MPDC team, sponsors, and volunteers who made this trip happen!

MPDC has launched the Prep & Promise food service training program, a hands-on pathway designed to prepare participants for entry-level roles in Boston Children's Hospital food service and hospitality fields. The program blends practical kitchen skills, food safety training, and workplace readiness to help participants build confidence and earn industry-recognized credentials.
As the new cohort gets underway, participants are practicing essential techniques, learning employer expectations, and receiving coaching to support their success. Prep & Promise gives participants a real path into stable work, with the skills, credentials, and coaching to back it up. MPDC looks forward to seeing this cohort step into the workforce with pride!

Actors’ Shakespeare Project is thrilled to continue and deepen our dedication to August Wilson’s canon by returning to the first chronological entry in the American Century Cycle: Gem of the Ocean.
This transportive and nourishing production explores community, oppression, and healing – as well as featuring the character that Wilson himself described as “the most significant persona of the cycle,” Aunt Ester.
Citizen Barlow thinks his journey is at an end when he arrives in Pittsburgh’s Hill District, but it has only just begun. Having fled from Alabama and desperate for redemption, he finds himself on the doorstep of Aunt Ester, a 285-year-old “soul cleanser” whose parlor is filled with history, music, and a lively cast of characters with plenty of stories to tell. As tensions flare between Pittsburgh’s Black community and the local steel mill, Ester sends Citizen on a fantastical journey to the City of Bones – where he must seek spiritual truth, and the key to liberation that his new city so urgently seeks.
