Linda Graham
Assistant Vice President, Direct Bill
What brought you to NLC 48 years ago?
I was sent for a job interview by the head of the business department at my local high school and was offered an office clerk job. I was allowed to leave school a month early to begin my work career! Three years later, my husband was transferred to Washington State. Two years later we were transferred back to CT. I called to see if NLC had any job openings and was told there were none. A few months later my mother called to let me know NLC had called to see if I was back in CT yet! I called and was told they were starting a Direct Billing project and asked if I was interested. As they say, the rest is history – after much programming, testing and two test agents willing to assist – we went live and received our first direct bill payment check dated March 5, 1982.
What do you love most about your role/work?
I’ve been allowed to wear many hats at NLC over the years giving me the ability to understand the many aspects of running this business. From structuring a mailroom to accommodate 350+ agents, purchasing furniture to fill our new office building, converting file cabinets to a color-coded filing system and then to images, phone systems, purchasing, printing, etc. As technology is evolving, I’m starting to hand over some of those hats to others!
From your perspective, what makes NLC special?
The people – we try to always have a person answer your phone call. If we don’t have the answer, we’ll find someone that can or we will take your name and number and get back to you as quickly as we can with the answer.
How do you like to spend your time outside of work?
Being with family and friends, trips to the beach and traveling.
