VALLEJO SYMPHONY - 90TH SEASON: Presents Fairytales. FEB 25-26
Ravel’s Mother Goose began its life as a group of piano miniatures, which later were brilliantly orchestrated, and then finally expanded into the ballet score that we will present to you. It is a magical score filled with wonder on every page, and finishes with one of the most-profound climaxes of the 20th century. Grieg’s Piano Concerto was to prove highly influential to impressionists such as Ravel, and its second movement is a heartfelt response to the birth of his daughter. I’m especially excited to present the work of Julia Perry, an African-American woman living in the mid-20th century, whose brilliantly-crafted music is a unique expression of neoclassical sensibilities distilled through the challenges she faced as a female composer of color in the United States.

5 DOMAINS OF HEALTHY DEVELOPMENT | | |

QUALITY AND CONSISTENT MUSIC EDUCATION ADVANCES 5 CORE DOMAINS NEEDED FOR HEALTHY HUMAN DEVELOPMENT
Research in neuroscience is confirming what founder and director, Wanda Cook has uncovered in her 40 years of music education. The neurological processes activated during music practice, rehearsals, lessons, and performances are not only necessary to human development but benefit other areas of human engagement. Neurobiologist, Dr. Nina Kraus calls the neuroauditory processing in our brains the "superhighway of brain activity". The sense of hearing requires more neurological activity than any other of our 5 senses. When children study music they hit the "jackpot" of neural activity. The significance is shown in the advancement of what Cook calls the 5 CORE DOMAINS OF HEALTHY DEVELOPMENT.
-
Intentional Listening: The ability to selectively listen to that which is important at the moment
-
Goal Orientated Focus: Understanding a goal as presented and utilizing the best skills to reach the goal
-
Emotional Resilience: Learning and using coping skills that empower the ability to recognize how to achieve accomplishment instead of giving up
-
Teamwork and Empathy: Recognizing and demonstrating the value of others in relationship with oneself in a partnered activity
-
Healthy Self Confidence: The ability to recognize one’s skills to empower their readiness to take a self-perceived risk. Conversely, the ability to recognize when one should not take a perceived risk
"This is an exciting time for YACM students, says Cook. "supported by the latest research in neuroscience, YACM is launching our INNER-ARTS initiative to intentionally fuse music education with development of the 5 Core Domains."
In the coming months,
- YACM families will see new practice guides that help students apply the 5 Domains in their studies.
- Teacher Training to apply the Domains in their lessons
- Outreach programs to at-risk youth to provide music interventions
- Development of an app to help student's track their musical development 5 core domain development.
