Children had the chance to operate construction equipment, with a little assistance from the pros, at the recent "Construction vs Cancer" event to benefit the American Cancer Society.

SN-ICC SUPPORTS CONSTRUCTION VS CANCER

The Chapter was pleased to be among the many sponsors of the outstanding "Construction vs Cancer" event on February 9 at the Silverton Hotel and Casino parking lot.

The Chapter contributed funds plus packages of building and fire safety-related coloring and activity books and crayons for the children who attended.

"Construction vs Cancer" is a unique fundraising event that provides a festive, fair-like atmosphere for young cancer survivors and their families, sponsors and other attendees. More than 1,500 little and big construction enthusiasts attended the event benefiting the American Cancer Society in the mission to eliminate cancer as a major health issue through research, patient services and advocacy.

The event gives children with cancer the opportunity to operate pieces of construction equipment, such as an
excavator, backhoe and bulldozer. The chidlren also had the chance to meet Metro Police along with their horse and dog officers, play in a giant sandbox, and win game prizes.

SN-ICC salutes all those involved in this successful event, which raised more than $250,000 this year - and the donations are still coming in!

We are doing well and are focusing on the many very positive aspects of Shawn's personality and life which was strongly reaffirmed by so many of his friends, extended family and other associates this past week.

SPOTLIGHT ON A CODE PROFESSIONAL
TERRY KOZLOWSKI

Terry Kozlowski is 2019 president of the Southern Nevada Chapter of the International Code Council.

A native Las Vegan, she is a plans examiner for the City of North Las Vegas where she has worked for nearly 20 years. She joined the city in 1999 as a customer service building inspector, with the Building Department, rising to a combination inspector and, then, plans examiner.

She is also a member of the adjunct faculty at the College of Southern Nevada where she teaches construction classes. She holds a property casualty insurance producer license.

She and her two sisters grew up in Las Vegas, but spent summers during their youth in rural Cudahy, Wisconsin where she assisted her grandfather, who was a plumber. "I would go out on jobs with him. Basically, he'd ask for a tool and I would hand it to him," she recalled of her childhood experiences in plumbing.

Kozlowski earned a bachelor of science degree in biology from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. She planned to become a scientist and work as a park ranger, but fate took her in a different direction. She worked more than a year as a reserve peace officer in Boulder City before securing an externship as a residential building inspector with the City of North Las Vegas Building Department.

Later, she was hired as a construction inspector by Parsons-Fleming-Taylor, which had a contract with the Clark County School District. About two years later, the school district hired her as a school construction inspector. She was there about a year and a half before going to the City of North Las Vegas Building Department.

She has served several years as a Chapter board member, rising to Chapter president in 2019. Also, she was chairperson of the Chapter's Education Committee and she has been involved in other Chapter committees and activities.

In her spare time, Kozlowski enjoys spending time with her family . She enjoys reading and hiking (she has hiked across Europe) and gold prospecting. She's panned for gold in California, Nevada and Utah.
