Rimrock Trails is pleased to introduce Child and Family Therapist Katherine Amman, LCSW. Katherine specializes in Parent-Child Interaction Therapy, also known as PCIT at our Bend Counseling Clinic.
PCIT is an evidence-based treatment program designed for caregivers and their young children (2 to 7 years old) who are experiencing social, behavioral, and/or emotional difficulties.
PCIT involves 2 phases of treatment. The first phase is Child-Directed Interaction (CDI) which involves teaching the parent daily 5-minute play therapy skills. CDI focuses on helping the parent facilitate a warm, supportive relationship as a basis for the development of social skills and emotional regulation. The second phase is called Parent Directed Interaction (PDI) where parents learn a predictable, consistent, and trauma-informed discipline method. PDI uses differential attention, effective commands, warnings, and consequences to address behavioral problems. With live coaching parents learn how to apply these skills while regulating their own emotions.
Unique in the way it is delivered, PCIT outlines consistent child-rearing practices with an appropriate balance between nurturance and appropriate limit-setting. Parents and children engage in a separate room divided by a one-way mirror, while the therapist is coaching in the parent’s ear using a blue tooth device. Parents can feel confident they are using the skills well with live hands-on practice. This approach makes the therapy move quickly, so kids and families can see results every week. Children really enjoy PCIT because they get to connect with their parents and find more positive ways of communicating with others. Parents really love it because they grow a more positive relationship with their children and feel more successful with how to address unwanted behaviors from their children.
If you or someone you know would benefit from PCIT, you can contact Rimrock Trails to make an appointment at (541) 388-8459 or visit our website at www.rimrocktrails.org.
