At Venture Café Winston-Salem's Thursday Gathering, name tags are "the great equalizers."
When people attend the free weekly event held on Thursdays, they get a name tag that includes their name and a number representing how many times they have been to a Thursday Gathering.
"But it doesn't say your title," said Karen Barnes, the nonprofit's executive director. "It doesn't say your organization. It doesn't say your interests. So you can't edit people out and they can't edit you out."
"It encourages everyone to ask, 'Why are you here? What are you all about?'" Barnes said. "We're in the South, so, 'What cranks your tractor?'"
The gatherings offer free mentoring, social connections and programming where people can learn from other people's experiences during panel discussions, hands-on experiences and demonstrations.
Venture Café "seeks to broaden, connect and support the innovation community through public spaces and programs to help anyone with an idea succeed."

Forsyth County Poverty Study

The sections of the Forsyth County Poverty Study are now published and live on their website.
Links and promotional highlights below.

Family Type Section:

  • Single-parent households in Forsyth County are more likely to be in poverty than married-couple households with children.
  • More than half of African American households with children are headed by females, a much higher rate than other race/ethnic groups.
  • Minority households (Hispanic/Latino households in particular) have higher poverty rate than White, non-Hispanic residents regardless of family type, which suggests that family type is not the only factor contributing to racial disparities in poverty.

"The Small Business Center is helping me realize and live my dream of entrepreneurship. The classes, have helped me understand the importance of social media and marketing strategies to steer my business into the virtual market place and the next level. The one on one counseling, has been such a help; mentoring me, as I strive to make my business self-sufficient and productive.
Everything that my fledgling company has accomplished would not have been possible without the support and assistance which I have received from the Small Business Center."
