U.S. SOCCER RESEARCH

Why do Parents Enroll their Children in Soccer?

U.S. Soccer is conducting a research project in collaboration with Northwestern University. The aim of the project is to learn about parents' reasons for enrolling their children in soccer.

Please find the consent form for full details about the study and data to be included HERE. If you have any questions about the study, you can reach out to Dr. José M. Oliva Lozano, at jlozano@ussoccer.org, who is the Director of Research and Innovation at U.S. Soccer.

Participating in this research is voluntary and it will not affect your treatment at the U.S. Soccer Federation or Northwestern University. You will not lose any benefits to which you are otherwise entitled. You will not be compensated for this study. You are eligible for this study if you have a child enrolled in youth soccer affiliated with U.S. Soccer.

The information gathered from your participation will help us highlight the benefits of playing and participating in soccer to increase soccer’s popularity in the United States. More interest in soccer will lead to easier access to play, elevation of the standard of play in the United States, and a number of physical, cognitive and psychosocial benefits for those who choose to play soccer. We plan to highlight these benefits with our study for others to review and understand.

If you participate in this research project, your data will be anonymously analyzed and will be used for research purposes (e.g., publications in scientific journals, book chapters, books, or conference presentations). All presentations and publications will be approved and written in collaboration with the U.S. Soccer Federation to ensure that your privacy and the team competitive advantage is preserved.

Please, let us know if you have any questions and we will forward them to the research team to assist you. Thank you again for considering this research opportunity.

OVERCOMING THE REFEREE SHORTAGE

Wyoming Soccer is working hard to gain more referees, and the best way to do that is to host or attend a referee clinic. We invite you to take advantage of the opportunity to offset some of the costs of youth soccer, earn some extra money, familiarize yourself with the rules and see things from a new perspective!

We also have incentives for those who return. You can find out about the 2024 recertification discount HERE.

MARCH - CLARA LIPP (NEWCASTLE SOCCER LEAGUE)

APRIL - BENNETT PEDRI (ROCK SPRINGS AVENGERS)

Newcastle Soccer League player, Clara Lipp, is in the spotlight for the Month of March.

Clara started playing soccer at the young age of 4. Clara started recreationally, but gradually transitioned to competitive/travel soccer and loves to play both striker and goalkeeper! She is strong in both offense and defense.

Last year, Clara tried out for Wyoming 307 Select and is currently part of the 2013/2014 Girls team. She has had the opportunity to travel with the team to Denver, Las Vegas and Mesquite. The team has done well and Clara has really enjoyed having the opportunity to play with other competitive and talented players from across Wyoming.

Clara has also taken advantage of opportunities to guest play with other clubs. She has been part of the Newcastle Chaotic competitive program and has guest played with Gillette Edge.

Outside of soccer, Clara participates in cheer, basketball and the Treble Tones Children's Choir. She attends Faith Formation classes at Corpus Christi Catholic Church and volunteers to help with the Annual St. Patrick's Day dinner. She also enjoys gymnastics, crafts, singing, listening to music, riding her horse and playing games with friends. Clara collects all kinds of fidgets and key chains and never turns down a good steak!

Clara was in a 4-wheeler accident in late August 2023. She had extensive surgery to repair her femur and her patella, taking her out for the Fall 2023 soccer season. She made it very clear that it was important to her to still support her teams, even if she was in a wheelchair or on crutches. She missed very few local practices and attended every game, helping with warm-ups where she could and being a positive presence on the bench. She traveled to Casper for monthly Wyoming 307 Select practices and to Las Vegas, where she also supported her team from the bench. This must have been so emotionally draining for a 9-year-old girl...to sit and watch her friends compete in the sport she had fallen in love with, but her maturity in recognizing the impact she could have from the sidelines was nothing short of astounding. She has worked extremely hard in physical therapy to get back on the pitch and was released to return to play in December (3 months earlier than expected). She has come a long way since those first few games post-release and is so excited to be playing this Spring!

Bennett Pedri from the Rock Springs Avengers Soccer Club is in the spotlight or the month of April.

Bennett started playing when she was only 3 1/2 years old! She hasn't guest played yet and this will be the first year Bennett is eligible to tryout for Wyoming 307 Select, as she will be nine this year, but certainly as the competitive spirit we are looking for! She usually plays center midfielder and defender.

Outside of soccer, Bennett loves to read everything she can get her hands on - especially fantasy and graphic novels - her absolute favorite is Harry Potter. Her school offers extra STEM classes which she rarely misses as she loves being creative and making things.

Bennett also loves climbing and has been climbing mountains with her Grandpa and aunt and uncle since she was only five. She is headed to Italy this summer to hike the Alps! She loves being outside and exploring nature. She was even part of a PBS documentary on hiking!

She also loves crafting and playing games with her brother and sister, and she is already an excellent pianist! She also loves to make and eat lefse. She spends much of her summers in Minnesota, she loves taking morning hikes on Sundays, followed by a big breakfast, and her most recent hobby/interest has been hairstyling. Needless to say, Bennett is a jack of many trades, even though she's only eight!

According to Bennett's coach, Allyson Cross, "Bennett is every coach’s dream! She is a leader on and off the field by continually working hard, being adaptable and is always very respectful and kind to everyone." One of Coach Allyson's favorite memories of Bennett is when during her second season as a U8, she drew out plays that she thought would work in their upcoming game. She handed over a whole stack of detailed drawings to Coach Allyson, and she still carries them in her backpack for good luck!

We are honored to recognize both Clara and Bennett as our spotlighted players for the months of March & April. Remember, the Player Spotlight can highlight achievement in any area, whether it's soccer, academics, community, or attitude. All spotlighted players will be recognized at our annual Awards Celebration in March 2025 and will be eligible to win our coveted 2025 Player of the Year Award! Please share your kids with us.

To nominate a player from your club for the Player Spotlight, please download the nomination form by clicking HERE.  Once completed, please email to wssa@wyomingsoccer.com.
