THE LATEST FROM WYOMING SOCCER

WYOMING SOCCER SAYS GOODBYE TO WYOMING STATE LEAGUE

Wyoming Soccer Association Board of Directors voted earlier this month to discontinue and eliminate the Wyoming State League (WSL), what little of it we had left.

Although we see value in leagues, it was always a pain point or Wyoming Soccer affiliated clubs and teams and served solely to qualify teams for Wyoming Cup & Championships over the past few years. This was a national US Youth Soccer requirement in the past to qualify teams for the National Championships Series, which our state championships fell under.

US Youth Soccer no longer requires league participation, therefore, we are no longer requiring.

Clubs and teams are still encouraged to participate in league matches with other state to include Utah State League, Colorado League, Dakota Premier League in South Dakota, and the Snake River League in Idaho. League matches are valuable and create more opportunity for teams to play.

WYOMING SOCCER PARTNERS WITH SOCCER PARENTING ASSOCIATION

We are proud to be a Leadership Partner with the Soccer Parenting Association. We believe youth soccer parents will be difference makers when it comes to improving the game and we believe a more collaborative environment between coach, parent, club and player is in the best interest of player development.

SOCCER FOR SUCCESS

We are Taking Off in Wyoming

Hopefully, by now you are familiar with the US Soccer Foundation program, Soccer for Success.

This is a soccer program implemented within schools in underserved communities and aims to use soccer to improve children’s physical and mental health and overall well-being.

Currently, Lisa Perry, who runs the program, is working with three Wyoming school districts and has a training scheduled in Green River on August 19. This will be open to PE teachers in Green River and neighboring areas. If you want your school to be involved, please email Lisa at lperry@ussoccerfoundation.org.

Wyoming Soccer has grant funding to help with this program, so please reach out to us if you would like your school district and/or community to get involved.

THE LATEST FOR REFEREES

OVERCOMING THE REFEREE SHORTAGE

Wyoming Soccer is working hard to gain more referees, and the best way to do that is to host or attend a referee clinic. We invite you to take advantage of the opportunity to offset some of the costs of youth soccer, earn some extra money, familiarize yourself with the rules and see things from a new perspective!

Contact Roger Brown if you have questions.

RECOGNIZING OUR OUTSTANDING REFEREES

We appreciate every referee in Wyoming, whether they are new and have only refereed a couple matches thus far, or whether they've been supporting Wyoming Soccer for decades!

Recently, five of our referees traveled to Salt Lake City to officiate matches at the US Youth Soccer FarWest Regional Presidents' Cup.

Mike Anderson, Katelynn Campbell, Andrew Moretti, Rachael Brown, Roger Brown (Wyoming State Referee Administrator, Mentor & Coach) & Owen Lasater

Of the five referees who attended, Andrew, Katelynn & Rachael were selected to officiate final matches and Katelynn was selected to be a referee at the upcoming USYS National Presidents' Cup in Wichita, KS next month. Rachael Brown was selected to officiate at the 2025 USYS National Presidents' Cup. We are so very proud of them and the way they represented Wyoming!

MAY - ENZO SONDGEROTH (LARAMIE SOCCER CLUB)

JUNE - LEIGHTON FEVOLD (GILLETTE EDGE SOCCER CLUB)

Laramie Soccer Club player, Enzo Sondgeroth, was in the spotlight for the Month of May.

Enzo has been playing soccer since the ripe, young age of four. He usually plays striker and he is fast! He also played Wyoming 307 Select this past year on the 2014 Boys team and is trying out once again for the 2024/2025 season.

This July, Enzo will be guest playing with the Gillette Edge club to travel to the Target USA Cup in Blaine, MN. He would also love to guest play with Jackson Hole Youth Soccer so he and his cousin can play together.

Enzo is quite the athlete, and outside of soccer he plays basketball, runs cross-country, does the long jump in track, plays tennis, flag football and baseball. He also tolerates hiking with his family, paddle-boarding (mostly to catch crawdads), mountain biking and alpine skiing. Out of all of this, his favorites are soccer and basketball.

Enzo finished 3rd in the FINA World Championships for Ninja Warrior when he was only eight. He finished first in two of the Fall 2023 Laramie Jackalopes cross country running races. His local Fire Basketball Team also won the 3rd/4th grade championship in the Fall of 2023. Clearly, Enzo is a strong, fierce competitor in everything he does.

He has a great sense of humor and is also well traveled. He has already been to Mexico, Vietnam, Japan & Ireland (not to mention many places in the US), and plans to attend his first MLS game this year! He loves playing with his friends, and loves to play soccer video games when he's not busy actually playing it outside!

Enzo has a Leopard Gecko named Herb and a tuxedo cat named Simon. He took it upon himself to be one of the ball boys for every home High School Girls Varsity and JV Game this Spring (his sister is a freshman in HS). His passion is truly soccer at all levels!

Enzo's coach, Josh Brummond, says, "Enzo is a prime example of the saying 'you play like you practice'. From the time he steps on the field to the very last second of every practice Enzo puts in 110% effort without hesitation. He has been challenged year after year to play up 2 age brackets with the older boys and continues to excel with each year's new challenges. And, he still managed to score 42 goals this season. He is a very impressive young man and we can't wait to see what the future holds."

Leighton Fevold from the Gillette Edge Soccer Club is in the spotlight or the month of June.

Leighton has been playing soccer since she was only four years old, and she usually plays center mid, literally linking the defense and attach, and Leighton does a beautiful job! She also is a great striker and is an aggressive player.

Leighton has been part of the Wyoming 307 Select Program for three years and played ODP for one. She attended the USYS West Region ODP Championships this past year and her team took 2nd place - losing the championship match 2-3. She was also selected for the USYS West Region ODP ID Camp, which will occur mid-July in Salt Lake City.

Leighton enjoys playing whenever the opportunity arises and she has been asked to guest play for the Black Hills Rapids the Casper Blades, the 12U Gillette Boys team and the Wyoming United Boys. Yes, she plays with the boys on a regular basis, and most recently traveled to Salt Lake City a couple weeks ago to play with the Gillette Edge 12U Boys in the 12U FarWest Regional Championships where her team became the first Wyoming team to win a National Championships Series (NCS) Regional match.

Leighton also participates in GATE (Gifted & Talented Education), where students focus on Critical and creative thinking, problem solving strategies, affective skills, research skills, learning/study/organizational Skills, and career exploration. You can see where many of these skills can also be transferred to the pitch!

In addition to soccer, Leighton enjoys playing basketball, making bracelets, doing diamond art and hanging out with her friends. She is a sucker for goldfish (the crackers) and never passes up a plate of spaghetti and meatballs. She loves to read mystery novels and her favorite book is The Ghost of Graylock by Dan Poblocki.

Leighton loves to collect medals and trophies. She is the oldest of three soccer players - she has two younger brothers. They are close, but there is always competition! Leighton is coached by her mom, Whitney, and she is a joy to watch play. Whether it's with the girls or the boys, Leighton can easily hold her own and is always one of the fiercest players on the pitch!

We are honored to recognize both Enzo and Leighton as our spotlighted players for the months of Mary & June. Remember, the Player Spotlight can highlight achievement in any area, whether it's soccer, academics, community, or attitude. All spotlighted players will be recognized at our annual Awards Celebration in March 2025 and will be eligible to win our coveted 2025 Player of the Year Award! Please share your kids with us.
