St. James Jimmies Spring Season Softball Opener

The Brunswick County St. James Jimmies and the State Farm Winding River softball teams played on Tuesday at the Jimmies Southport field. The Jimmies won the first game 21-14.  Great fielding provided by Steve Tien, Brian Blackmer, Jay Conttone and John Salerno.  Strong hitting lead by Bob Matarazzo, John Salerno, Dale Hundley, Tony Pace, Steve Tien, Jay Conttone, Lou D’Abramo, Brian Blackmer, Joe Ferrera, Bob Lewis, Dave Sleight and John Summerville. Outstanding catches by Steve Tien, Jay Conttone, Lou D’Abramo, Brian Blackmer, and Tony Pace helped seal the win. Winning pitcher was Chuck Ott with his reliable catcher Bob Lewis.

The second game was more uneven with the Jimmies showing strong fielding and hitting skills with a 24-11 win. Combined winning pitchers were Roger Albizu and Al Jaeger

It should be noted that Winding River offered to play at the Southport field when the St James Jimmies and St. James Gators were the only teams playing at the Southport field over past seasons. Lockwood Folly, Cedar Grove Middle School and Shallotte are the other fields. This showed great sportsmanship by Winding River and the Jimmies appreciated their willingness to play at the Southport field.

Next game at Cedar Grove Middle School against the Slammers at 9:15am.  Fans always welcomed.

The St. James Gators are managed by Mike Gordan and the St. James Jimmies are managed by Bill Sample. For more information, contact either manager.

St. James Mixed Bowling League
League Championship Night
JB & The Boys were ahead of Philly Four by one point going into the championship match.  Philly Four won the first two games to go up by three. If they won the third game they would be the champs. But, JB & The Boys were not done yet. They came back with a roar and took the final game to go down only one point. It was up to total pins for the series to decide the winner.  JB needed a big game and they got it!  Philly Four took four points and JB & The Boys took three. It was a tie! After discussing the options, both teams decided to be co-champions of the world and split the prize money! Wow! What a finish to a great session!

In addition to all the drama for first place, we had some great bowling by both men and women in the league.

Men’s High Handicap Game went to Doug Linn with a 279. He was followed by Tony Rollins and Bob Wanczowski , both with a 263!

High Handicap Series went to Bob Wanczowski with a real nice 724.  Kevin Broadbin came in with a 709 and John VanOrmer and Tony Rollins finished with a nice 704! Nice rolling, guys!

The night’s honor scores for the women went to Donna Dudley for high Handicap Game with a 264.  Sheila Sullivan and Bev Mastrovich were right behind with a 259 and 257 respectively.

High Handicap Series went to Barbara McMichael with a very nice 729.  Bev Mastrovich was right behind with a 721 and Peggy O’Connel finished the group with an impressive 692. Way to go ladies!

Team and individual awards will be presented next Monday at the League Banquet. We’ll then have one last night of bowling fun with the no-tap tournament!

Now that we have two sessions under our belt, we’re looking forward to having even more teams for the fall.

If you’re interested in joining us as a team, couple or individual for the next session, contact Charlie Mastrovich at  mastrovich547@gmail.com

Don’t forget to hone your skills on Sunday night bowling with Charlie & Bev.

Have a great summer everyone!

Week Ending April 7th Results
(Omitted by Last Week by Editor Error)

The stage is set. The big night is finally here. Next Monday the world’s best will vie for the exclusive title of World Champion Bowling Team!!! Well, close anyway.

Philly Four is still one game behind JB and The boys so they’ll duke it out for first place honors.  After that, it’s anyone’s guess as to where the final standings will fall. Seven teams have a chance at third place on down so the final night of competition will be fierce indeed!

This week saw another run at a perfect game, that alas fell short.  Doug Linn had the first 10 strikes before missing his mark and leaving with a 288 game. Still pretty good (even though he couldn’t beat Bill Doody’s 290)! The lane conditions were extremely tough this week but we still had some nice games and series.  Doug had high handicap game with a 299, followed by Bob Mazzenga with a 286 and George Barr with his nice 271.

High Handicap Series went to Bob Mazzenga with a 721 (nice rolling tonight, Bob!). He was followed by Ray Cook with a 708 and Zeke Mendoza right behind with a 706. Nice rolling guys!

Jeannie Rodbell and Carol Mazzenga shared women’s top honors with 253 Handicap Games. Yeahhhh!  Sue Shaylor was right behind with her 246. Very nice ladies!

Charlotte Groelly’s 718 took the night’s High Handicap Series honor. She was followed by Carol Mazzenga with her 706 and Phyllis Barnaby with her 690. Great shooting!

One more week to go to determine the final standings. After that, it’s on to our banquet and No-Tap Tournament for a final night of FUN!
St. James Model Yacht Racing Club
Rain, rain go away!!! Just as the Skippers gathered to race on Tuesday, it began to rain for the second week in a row. At that point there were only four Nirvanas and four Dragon 95's ready to race and no Race Official (must have seen the weather report). Two of the Nirvana Skippers decided to call it a day as it appeared the rain was going to last a while, which meant there was no quorum fo r Nirvana races to count. The two remaining Nirvana Skippers also had their Dragon 95's with them, which gave the Skippers left four Dragon 95's to put in the water once the rain passed. Skippers  Tony DeFilippis, Dick Denzler, Rob McKinley  and  Charlie Sweeney  spent the next hour and ½ or so running informal tuning races against each other. Skipper  Bill Miller  also showed up later on with his Nirvana and ran some practice legs with the Dragon 95's

On Thursday, the sky was sunny and blue with scattered clouds with a temperature of about 72 degrees and winds out of the Northeast at 8 to 9 knots, gusting to 12 knots. Race Official  Larry Rogers  set up short, but challenging course that used the Yellow/Green Buoys for the start line and required a series of long upwind tacking legs to a port rounding of the Orange Buoy, then across to the Blue Buoy for a port rounding for a final downwind sprint passing on the shoreside of the 2 Buoy and home to the Yellow/Green finish line. The downwind run to the finish was particularly challenging for the Nirvanas as some wind gusts caused them to submarine and spin out.

The Nirvana class only had three boats racing and each of the three Skippers had two first place finishes. The Nirvana Skippers were  Harry Oakley  with the #26 boat;  Mike Ryerson  with the #25 boat; and  Carolyn Sherwin  with the #91 boat. Overall, Carolyn had the most consistent day of racing for the Nirvanas with four second place finishes to go with her two wins.

The Dragon 95 class had just four boats race. Skipper  Dick Denzler , with the #3 boat, had yet another dominant day of racing, winning all six races.  Skipper  Rob McKinley , with the #55 boat, had four second place finishes to go with a third and a fourth place finish. Skipper  Sandy Graham , with the #93 boat, had four third place finishes as well as two second place finishes. Skipper  Dave Ham,  with the #632 boat, had five fourth places finishes and a third place finish. All in all it was a great day to be racing sailboats.

Due to road construction at the pond on Wednesday, this week’s. boat tune-up day at the Seaside Pond was moved to 1 PM on next Wednesday, April 17th. If you are attending,   please reply again to all in the email that Commodore  Mark Hamer  sent out to all Club members on April 3rd regarding this session change.

Final Results

Congratulations to Ocean’s Eleven for their decisive victory in this season’s St. James Billiards League!  Scoring 133 points in a hurricane shortened season is very impressive and makes them a multiple year League Champion.

The race in the final night of the season was for second place and Brewski’s , with a 7 point win, finished in second place. They were second most of the season but needed a big win to cement themselves in the Runner-Up position. Finishing in the tertiary spot and winning 5 points in their last match, RunEm , co-winners last year with Rackem , wound up a fine season in third place. Winding up the top five teams, Wanderer’s finished fourth and Rackem finished fifth. Finishing strong in the final match winning 6 points, were Eight Balls and Team Medinah . Winning 5 points were Team Belfair and Pocket Pounders .
