NEWS OF NOTE

JHU Hub

In the ancient Indian language, Sanskrit, "taara" means "star," Shanthi Ramakrishna says. "We want to be a star point of light to an artisan at risk of poverty," she says. "Our mission is to provide economic empowerment to artisans in search of a living wage, while upholding a completely environmentally conscious end-to-end supply chain."

Congratulations!

Clare Rock, Valeria Fabre, Matt Robinson, Trish Simner, Vidya Mave and others have been awarded a CDC grant for “Characterizing environmental reservoirs and their potential role in transmission of multi-drug resistant organisms (MDROs) in healthcare facilities in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs)”

"This project, led by ID faculty Drs. Fabre, Robinson and Rock, aims to characterize multi-drug resistant (MDR) environmental reservoirs in hospitals in Argentina and India, two countries with a high burden of MDR-gram negative organisms including carbapenem resistant- Acinetobacter baumanii, MDR-Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and carbapenem resistant Enterobacterales.

The Johns Hopkins team, in close collaboration with hospitals in Argentina and India, will investigate the role of these reservoirs in transmission of MDR infections in the hospital, including the evaluation of the temporal and genetic relationships of high-priority MDR-organisms between identified environmental reservoirs and patients who are colonized/infected."
MEDIA COVERAGE
The Times of India, Aug. 23, 2022
By Indu Bhushan and David Peters

The Covid-19 pandemic has exposed weaknesses in every society and health system around the world and continues to disrupt economies globally. Covid-19 seems to be evolving into an endemic disease, much like influenza, that returns regularly and occasionally with large epidemics and pandemics. Additionally, there are always other emerging infectious diseases that remind us to continue strengthening our health systems to prepare against the next health emergency.
