U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Vessel Safety Check in Seattle

Seattle boaters can ensure their vessels are in top shape and meet safety standards by participating in the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary's Vessel Safety Check (VSC). This complimentary service is designed to enhance boating safety and awareness, ensuring that recreational boats comply with federal and state regulations.

What is a Vessel Safety Check?

A Vessel Safety Check is a free, no-risk service provided by trained members of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary. During the inspection, a qualified examiner will review your boat’s equipment and safety measures, including:

  • Life jackets and personal flotation devices (PFDs)
  • Fire extinguishers
  • Navigation lights
  • Sound-producing devices (horn, whistle, etc.)
  • Visual distress signals (flares)
  • Registration and numbering
  • Overall vessel condition

Benefits of a Safety Check

  • Peace of Mind: Knowing your vessel is safe and compliant with safety regulations.
  • Safety Awareness: Learning about potential hazards and how to address them.
  • No Penalties: The VSC is a non-enforcement program. If your boat doesn’t pass, you won’t be fined; instead, you’ll receive guidance on how to meet safety standards.
  • Decal of Compliance: Boats that pass the inspection receive a VSC decal, demonstrating your commitment to safety and potentially making future checks quicker and easier.

How to Schedule a Check

  • Scheduling a Vessel Safety Check is simple. You can request an inspection by visiting the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary’s website and filling out a request form. Examiners will work with you to find a convenient time and location for the inspection, whether at your home, dock, or marina.
