Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey Receives $10 Million State Appropriation for Pediatric Cancer
A $10 million appropriation to support the advancement of pediatric cancer research and treatment was included in this year’s state budget. This legislation, which was sponsored by Senate President Stephen M. Sweeney and Senator Anthony M. Bucco, establishes the Pediatric Cancer Center at Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey, which in partnership with RWJBarnabas Health, is a leader in pediatric cancer research and care. Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey Director Steven K. Libutti, MD, FACS, who is also senior vice president of oncology services at RWJBarnabas Health and vice chancellor for cancer programs for Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences, has been named by the business journal NJBIZ as a 2021 Healthcare Hero. Clinical Leader Recognized as Fellow of the American Society of Radiation Oncology
Salma Jabbour, MD, vice chair of Clinical Research and Faculty Development at Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey, and clinical chief of Radiation Oncology at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, an RWJBarnabas Health facility, has been named a Fellow of the American Society of Radiation Oncology (FASTRO), the world’s largest radiation oncology society. Dr. Jabbour is one of 28 members to be named a fellow, a distinction that honors individuals who have made significant contributions to the society and to the field of radiation oncology through research, education, patient care and service to the field. Rutgers Research: Phage Display-Based Gene Delivery for COVID-19 Vaccine Design
One unexplored alternative to currently approved vaccination types is phage display-based vaccines, which represent an inexpensive and versatile tool for large-scale immunization. Investigators from Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey along with the Center for Theoretical Biological Physics (CTBP) at Rice University in Houston, Texas, have demonstrated that a technology with favorable biological attributes known as phage display could be a viable platform for the development of new vaccines to protect against COVID-19. Findings from the proof-of-concept work were published online in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) journal. Learn more
