America’s Birth in Stirring Words:
Revolutionary War Battles
and Poems They Inspired
with Jeffrey Zygmont
Wednesday, August 26 at 6:00pm
Patriots went to war to win freedom. Poets went to work to praise them, and to express the spirit of independence and the valor that created our nation. We'll review some key battles of the American Revolution – the people, the tactics and outcomes – and close each battle review with a historic poem that expresses the emotion and devotion of the soldiers.
Thus, alongside facts, we experience the energy and enthusiasm that made America. We also get a look at 18th Century weapons, camp practices, home lives and backgrounds of soldiers. Physical props, plus projections that show maps, paintings and other illustrations, make the factual, historic aspects of the presentation easier to grasp and appreciate.
Battles covered include Lexington and Concord, Bunker Hill, Trenton and others. Poems such as “Molly Maguire at Monmouth” and Longfellow’s “Paul Revere’s Ride” bring the emotion of the conflicts to life.

White Mountains’ Extreme Weather
in Three Thrilling Search and Rescue Incidents
with Drew Bush, Executive Director
Mt. Washington Observatory
Wed., September 2 at 6:00pm
Explore the daring rescues of people in distress in the White Mountains led by New Hampshire’s Department of Fish and Game and the region’s volunteer search and rescue teams. Whether in the depths of winter or the warmth of summer, the ever-changeable weather in the high peaks can create unexpected hazards.
In this talk, Mount Washington Observatory Executive Director Drew Bush will explore how weather played a factor in each situation and examine how rescuers overcame all obstacles to save lives. Drew will draw upon historical records as well as the writings of Nick Howe and Ty Gagne to examine the decisions that led to an incident, their impacts, and how rescuers were able to respond.

Meet the Artist
Bob Mathes
Wednesday, September 2
5:00pm - Beaver Room
Exhibit in Main Library
Please stop by to meet September's artist Bob Mathes and to take in his art exhibit, The Art Of the Journey which will be on display throughout the month.
"Photography has been a tool to intensify my search for beauty during my travels. Painting encourages my observation of colors and beauty in a different way. Travel, adventure, mountains, and memorable personal journeys are what I tried to portray in these paintings from India to Namibia to Yosemite and to my own struggle with crutches. I even dabbled in a few 'Surrealistic Realism' paintings."
Bob Mathes is a mostly retired family physician who has lived in Wolfeboro since 1988 and does a fair amount of hiking and bicycle journeys.

WACs, WASPs & Rosies:
The Women Who Served
New Hampshire During WWII
with Leah Dearborn,
Aviation Museum of New Hampshire
Wednesday, September 16 at 6:00pm
More than 350,000 American women served in uniform during World War II, both at home and abroad, while countless others supported the war effort as civilians. In New Hampshire, women stepped forward to serve in the WACs, the Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard Women’s Reserves, the Women Airforce Service Pilots and the Army and Navy Nurse Corps.
Across the nation, “Rosies” filled factories and shipyards, taking on jobs once reserved for men. This program highlights the remarkable stories of New Hampshire women such as Sister Teresa of Nashua, who trained as a WASP before becoming a Carmelite nun, and Doris Moore of Portsmouth, a member of the “Six Triple Eight,” an all-Black, all-female battalion stationed in Europe during the final days of the war. Discover the courage, resilience and determination of the women who helped shape victory on the home front and beyond.
