The Turkish Heritage Organization is excited to bring our Non-Resident Fellowship program to Turkey next week, as our fellows learn more about U.S.-Turkey relations and dynamics while meeting with various NGO's, businesses and organizations while in Ankara and Istanbul.

WORLD REFUGEE DAY 2019
On the 50th anniversary of the 1951 Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees in 2001 the U.N. declared June 20th World Refugee Day. Last week THO joined the rest of the world in celebrating # WRD2019 and recognizing and celebrating the vast contributions that refugees make.

Turkey Still Important for F-35 Team
Though Turkey has refused to halt their impending deal with Russia over the S-400 missiles, it still remains an important NATO ally and player in the F-35 program.

White House Considers Sanction Packages for Turkey
As Turkey moves forward with their deal to purchase the Russian S-400 missile defense system, the U.S. continues to consider potential sanctions in response. The most severe sanction package under consideration would cripple the already fragile economy in Turkey by targeting Turkish businesses in the defense sector. 

Turkey Not Deterred by Looming Sanctions, U.S receives Criticism from Partner Nations
The Foreign Minister of Turkey, Mevlut Cavusoglu, announced early this week that Turkey has already bought the Russian S-400 missile defense system despite facing threats of U.S. sanctions. In addition, partner nations in the F-35 Fighter Jet Program disapprove of the U.S. threatened sanctions. 

U.S. to Potentially Sanction Iran
Following the shooting down of a U.S. drone and the attacks on tankers in the Gulf of Oman, the U.S. is considering more severe sanctions. Iran has responded by stating its refusal to come to the negotiating table under strict sanctions and will continue to shoot down U.S. drones.

Hard-hit Turkish Assets Hinge on Election, Trump-Erdogan Meeting

Election results will determine the trajectory of the Turkish economy. Foreign investors are waiting to see what President Trump and Erdogan are able to negotiate in the wake of the lira crumbling.

Turkish Food Exports Soar
This year, Turkish food exports are expected to exceed over $1 billion. As Turkey increases participation in the international food scene, such as the Summer Fancy Food competition in New York this summer, increase American exposure to Turkish delicacies.

$300 Million for Education in Turkey
In order to provide a safer environment for students, faculty, and staff in the areas that are the most at risk for earthquakes, the World Bank has arranged $300 million in funding to improve these structures.

Murat Köprülü  is a  Turkish American  investment professional and  philanthropist . He is currently advisor on Emerging Markets to four hedge fund groups based in New York. He is also the Chairman of the  American Turkish Society , founded in 1949, the oldest U.S.-based  not-for-profit organization  that seeks to enhance economic, diplomatic, cultural, and educational ties between the United States and Turkey.
