THO Summer Research Program: Research Presentation
This Friday , November 30th , the participants of THO's Summer Research Program will return to Washington, D.C. to present their research. The program, titled “Refugees and Turkey: A Research Symposium,” will take place at THO’s office from 11am-1pm . Their presentations will revolve around the challenges and opportunities that refugees face, and how Turkey has dealt with the refugee crisis. For more information, click here !
Turkish Deputy Energy Minister Bayraktar to Visit November 29
This Thursday, November 29th, THO and the U.S.-Turkey Business Council will be hosting Turkey's Deputy Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, Alparslan Bayraktar for a roundtable discussion at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce from 11am-12pm.
US Foreign Policy in the Middle East and US-Turkey Security Cooperation in 2019
On December 6th, THO will be hosting a panel discussion on " US Foreign Policy in the Middle East and US-Turkey Security Relations." Lt. General Daniel Christman, U.S. Army (Ret.), SVP for International Affairs, U.S. Chamber of Commerce, Turkish Brigadier General (Ret.) Dr. Naim Baburoglu, Istanbul Aydin University , and Dov S. Zakheim , Senior Fellow at Center for Naval Analyses, Former Department of Defense Official, will partake in the panel discussion.
THO Ambassador Series
THO’s latest program will offer the D.C. audience an opportunity to hear from various ambassadors on the issues of importance to their respective nations. On December 17th, THO will host His Excellency, Ambassador Elin Suleymanov , Azerbaijan's Ambassador to the United States , for a roundtable discussion about the the trilateral relationship between Turkey, U.S. and Azerbaijan .

U.S. Setting Up 'Observation Posts' Along Turkey-Syria Border
The United States is setting up “observation posts” along parts of the border between Turkey and Syria to help keep the focus on defeating Islamic State militants in Syria, Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said on Wednesday. 

The observation posts would not require additional U.S. troops being sent to Syria, Mattis told reporters. The Pentagon says it has about 2,000 troops in Syria.

Turkey Calls on Foreign Investors, Seeks New Cooperation for Mutual Benefit
As a result of its stable policies, Turkey has attracted around $201 billion of foreign direct investment (FDI) in the last 16 years. The government's policies and incentives aim to continue attracting foreign investors and new long-term investments that constitute high value-added and qualified employment in the upcoming period. 

While global trade wars loom, Turkey is seeking new cooperation in which both sides benefit, according to Industry and Technology Minister Mustafa Varank.

Security
Congress to Make Determination on F-35s for Turkey
Congress now has its chance to evaluate Turkey’s participation in building the F-35 stealth jet after Defense Secretary Jim Mattis delivered a report to Capitol Hill on the NATO ally’s  $12 billion contribution  to the program.

Lawmakers are weighing whether to kick Turkish firms out of the F-35 program amid fraught relations with the NATO ally. Turkey has shown interest in purchasing up to 100 of the latest-generation aircraft and has already taken possession of two of them, but  Congress froze  further deliveries pending the report on the US-Turkey relationship, including Turkey’s participation in the fighter jet’s supply chain.

Turkey Alone Hosts 15 Percent of Refugees in World: MP
Turkey alone hosts around 15 percent of the refugees in the world, according to a lawmaker of Turkey's ruling Justice and Development (AK) Party on Thursday.

Addressing the 15th International Parliamentary General Meeting held in Seoul, Abdullah Guler, the head of parliament’s Turkey-South Korea parliamentary friendship group said Turkey hosts around 3.5 million Syrian refugees.

In addition to Syrians, Turkey hosts about 1 million people from different nations, Guler added.

Turkey Rejects US Deadline to Cut Energy Imports from Iran
Turkey’s foreign minister objected to the Trump administration’s demand that it slash imports of Iranian petroleum products in six months, arguing that the time frame is too tight given his country’s reliance on its neighbor for energy supplies.

“I cannot diversify my energy sources in six months or two years,” Mevlut Cavusoglu said at a briefing in Washington after meeting with US Secretary of State Michael Pompeo, Bloomberg reported.

Turkish Professor Awarded for Efforts on Communication
A Turkish professor has been awarded by a New York-based international organization for his studies on communication theory and wireless communication, according to a Turkish university.

“Prof. Murat Uysal, Head of the Department of Electrical-Electronics Engineering at Ozyegin University, has been elevated to 'Fellow' grade by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE),” Istanbul Ozyegin University said in a written statement on Thursday.

The IEEE is a non-profit international organization advancing innovation and technological excellence in the field of electrical and electronics engineering in over 160 countries with more than 423,000 members, according to the statement.

UNESCO Praises Turkey for Inclusive Education Policies for Refugees
The United Nations’ culture and education agency has praised  Turkey  in a new report for its “commitment to include  Syrian   children  in its education system.”

Turkey  hosts 1 million refugees of school age and has committed to include them in its national education system by 2020, as opposed to countries such Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Thailand where no such promises have been made,”  UNESCO ’s 2019 Global  Education Monitoring Report (GEM Report) said, which was published on Nov. 20 in conjunction with Universal Children’s Day.
