Welcome to The Leadership Visalia Connection!

A monthly e-newsletter created just for our alumni community. Each issue will bring you updates on the current class, spotlights on fellow alumni, and meaningful ways to stay involved—whether through volunteering, board service, or reconnecting with old classmates.

Dear Leadership Visalia Alumni,

At the heart of Leadership Visalia is a shared commitment to giving back and strengthening the community we call home. As alumni, you play a vital role in continuing that impact beyond the program. Whether through volunteering, mentoring, or simply reengaging, there is a place for you to plug back in.

The Alumni Committee is excited to offer two upcoming opportunities to reconnect and make a difference. Sign up below. We hope to see you there!

Education Day Session Highlights:

Leadership Visalia participants took part in Local Education Day in March, gaining firsthand insight into the systems, challenges, and support networks that shape educational access in our community. The day included tours of the VUSD Family & Community Resource Center and COS Access & Ability Center, interactive activities focused on navigating classroom barriers, and a panel discussion featuring local education and youth development leaders. The session deepened participants’ understanding of how collaborative efforts are working to close opportunity gaps and strengthen student success across Visalia.

Community Project:

This year's class partnered with Enchanted Playhouse Theatre Company on the community class project. This year's project aimed to strengthen the organization's community connections, refresh its marketing, and expand opportunities for local youth through the arts.

Join us in celebrating the launch of Enchanted’s rebrand—attend the Ribbon Cutting on April 11th at 2 PM at the Rotary Theatre!

Title: Planning & Permit Manager

What year did you graduate from Leadership Visalia?

2020

Where do you currently work and what is your role?

I currently work for Tulare County as the Planning & Permit Manager. I oversee the Permit Center, Environmental Planning, and Special Projects Divisions for Unincorporated Tulare County. I help citizens navigate the Permitting process.

How has Leadership Visalia impacted your personal or professional life?

Leadership Visalia provided real life hands on skill building, professional workshops, and permanent community connections. The program provided insight into different professional areas that were new to me. As a land use planner by trade, I had the opportunity to learn about the Healthcare industry, public safety, law enforcement, and Non-profits.

What is one leadership lesson or moment that has stuck with you since the program?

The Day Session Class Planning is my most fond memory. My topic area was Public Safety, and my partner and I had to learn about a professional occupation we did not have experience with. While the experience was definitely fun and rewarding, it also gave me a better understanding and respect for what our first responders face. I also learned about Law Enforcement, K-9 Units, VisaliaPAL program, and Court/Jury System. I would also say our Community Project of Buddy Benches at Visalia Unified schools is another huge moment. Our Class was able to accomplish the project even while navigating Covid-19 shutdowns.

What are you most passionate about in your career or community work?

That would definetely be helping people. I believe there is so much good and love in the world and I see it in and all around Visalia. We have so many great citizens, organizations, and programs. For work, I try to help citizens navigate the Public planning process. Another dear personal cause is Animals, and all of my pets have been Rescues.

What advice would you give someone thinking about joining Leadership Visalia?

Don't hesitate, just do it. This program is for people who love Visalia and it connects you with other people who have a love for Visalia. Having been through the program, the skills, connections, and knowledge are lifelong skills you can enhance. Also, the lifelong friendships (personal and professional) the program gives.

What’s something fun or unexpected that people might not know about you? (Hidden talent, favorite hobby, etc.)

I love Maps and Geography, and exploring the world. I also love Alpacas and want to open an Alpaca ranch in the future.
