The League is excited to celebrate the month of April as
Autism Acceptance and National Volunteer Appreciation Month!

My League Story, Youth Autism Services: Joey S.
As a recent graduate of his high school class and The League's Youth Autism Services afterschool Therapeutic Integration Program, Joey is eager to find meaningful work and be as independent as possible. In order to combat his post-graduation isolation, Joey has been volunteering in the same afterschool services that he received just a few short months prior, where he helps distribute snacks, sets up for activities, and assists with arrivals and dismissals.
Joey's family and friends are most excited for him to begin a six-week course of workforce development with The League's Employment Services Program so that he may finetune his current skills, learn new strategies, and reach a better understanding of what he wants to do in life.
Currently, Joey is enjoying his "exploration era," where he can pair his passions with his volunteerism and work towards passing the College Readiness Assessment. He loves to be social and learn about chemistry, physics, and trains - he has recently written a proposal to Baltimore & Ohio Railroad concerning the Acela trains and is trying to convince his mother to attend the upcoming locomotive auction. Joey's love of trains has even prompted his volunteer role at the B&O Railroad Museum on Saturdays where he straightens the directional signs, refills the map stations, tidies up public spaces, organizes toys in the children's area, and practices giving tours to visitors.

“I saw him grow up a lot [in the program]. The personalization of care is so different from other programs."
-Maria S., Mother of Joey
| |
For Joey's mom Maria, it is hard for her to picture her son where he is today without The League's Youth Autism Services Program. He has learned to be social, flexible, communicative, and curious. Maria is so grateful for those who have learned to "speak Joey" throughout his years at The League. Wherever life takes him, Maria and Joey both hope that The League is a part of his journey in achieving his goals.
If you are interested in this event or wish to learn more about the Youth Autism Services Program, please reach out to Michelle Johnson at mjohnson@leagueforpeople.org. All are welcome to attend!

Happy National Volunteer Appreciation Month!
Thank you to our amazing volunteers over the past 97 years! From past and present volunteer leadership on the Board of Directors, to individuals devoting their Saturday nights to the monthly fun at CLUB1111, to all of our corporate professionals and university students, to everyone who has served on our event committees - our mission would not be possible without your time, talents, and treasures!

On March 13h, volunteers from M&T Bank spent the afternoon with adults in our Medical Day Program making St. Patrick's Day crafts, playing games of strategy, and talking about their favorite recipes. Volunteer groups from our corporate partners and vendors make large-scale activities like these so much more fun! Check out their TikTok video for a quick recap of the day! |
Speaking of fun, participants in the Adult Medical and Meaningful Day Programs had a blast learning how to make scones with Andrew Rose and Martha Lucius, local volunteers passionate about entrepreneurial training. Some of the recipes included bison and cheese, wheat flour and cinnamon, coconut and almond flour, and pineapple! The results were delicious and we look forward to more collaborative opportunities like these where adults in our programs can master new skills!

We are extremely grateful for our corporate partnerships and networks of connections with volunteers! If your school, company, or organization is interested in making a difference with The League, please contact Kait Wieler, Manager, Community Engagement, at kwieler@leagueforpeople.org.
On Wednesday, March 27th, The League's Employee Culture Committee hosted an Opening Day Grand Slam Celebration to kick off what is sure to be a successful season for the Orioles! There were games, raffles, concession stand snacks, and hot dogs from Don's Dogs!
