My League Story: Adult Medical Day, Melissa B.

Melissa shows off her spooky cool temporary tattoo that she received at October's CLUB1111.

A little over a year ago, Melissa joined the Adult Medical Day Program dealing with anxiety and isolation. Now that she attends programming at The League, Melissa is a talented, social, and independent individual that is learning new skills and setting goals for herself.

"The League helps me be a better person."

Since quitting smoking, Melissa spends her time playing games, making arts and crafts, exercising in The Wellness Center, volunteering with the Day Habilitation Program, and worshipping with her friends. Creative writing and art therapy classes are prompting Melissa's inventiveness. Melissa has also been able to save her money to purchase a ticket to CLUB1111 on the second Saturday of every month where she gets her nails painted, receives temporary tattoos, and dances with her friends from all over Maryland.

Melissa enjoys reading, watching comedy specials, and helping other people. She and her tabby cat Princess are happy to live very close to The League. The League is proud to support Melissa as she strengthens her relationships and makes healthy decisions.

The League Fund Year-End Campaign Progress

Thank you for your support of The League Fund’s Year-End Campaign thus far! There is still time to give! Jimmy, Erica, and Kurtis are excited that we are so close to reaching our goal! When he’s not rehearsing for theatrical productions with his friends, Jimmy is delivering meals and nutrition to the homebound residents of Baltimore. Erica has been writing lyrics to her very own song and coming to CLUB1111 on the second Saturday of the month to make new friends and share the joy of music with others. Kurtis has been working out in The Wellness Center and practicing appropriate social behaviors with his peers.

A gift to The League Fund, during any time of the year, allows us to continue important services on campus and in our community. Donations bridge the gap between program service fees and government funding and the cost of services provided to fulfill our participants' needs. The League Fund supports our ability to offer individuals the opportunity to gain independence, increase self-sufficiency, and improve quality of life. Your gift enables us to not just offer services to individuals with disabilities, like Jimmy, Erica, and Kurtis, but also offer critical services to support growth, connections, and sense of purpose in the streets, homes, organizations, and businesses of Baltimore. Together, we are able!

The Season of Giving

On Friday, November 18th, Youth Autism Services staff, participants, and family members gathered for their second annual Harvest Celebration at The League. The party featured raffles, games, Fall arts and crafts, photography, and dinner catered by "Flight American-Fusion.” Everyone had a fantastic time playing, feasting, and giving thanks for the incredible support system inherent to the Youth Autism Services Program. The Youth Autism Services Team is looking forward to the Snow Valley Winter Extravaganza scheduled for December 16th

Adult Medical Day participants held their “Grateful Thankful Blessed” Celebration on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving where they worshipped, sang songs, and read poetry about the things they are appreciative of during this Giving Season. Lunch was a smorgasbord of all the holiday fixings: turkey, sweet potatoes, greens, mac n’ cheese, and pie.

Meaningful Day Play

On November 30th, Meaningful Day participants performed all of the musical numbers from Annie in a one-of-a-kind production at The Sky is the Limit Community Theater in Dundalk! After ten weeks of rehearsal, performers from several similar agencies sang, danced, and developed their own choreography with props to a very full audience of friends, family members, and supporters! They also performed “A Letter to Santa” on Wednesday, December 14th to put everyone in a festive holiday mood!

The League is Top Workplace!

In addition to being an Employer of Choice, The League for People with Disabilities has been awarded as a Top Workplace for 2022 by The Baltimore Sun! Based on a confidential survey of our employees, The League supports its staff with a friendly, engaging, effective, and diverse company culture. We would not be able to provide our participants and neighbors with top quality care without the incredible professionals on our team.

Did you know that November 13th is World Kindness Day? The League’s Employee Activities Committee celebrated the special occasion with muffins, apple cider, and blank cards on which staff members could write kind notes. Kindness makes the world a better place and The League does its part to spread compassion to our community.

A Concluding Note from Our President & CEO

Dear Friends of The League,

With the holidays upon us, The League is bustling with activity and cheer. Merriment abounds as we deck the halls with fresh paint and trim the floors with new baseboards. Our interior space is getting a facelift just in time for the New Year and our 96th anniversary of serving the Baltimore disability community.

As the weather turns cold and the daylight hours shorten, the children in our Youth Autism Services are swimming laps in the heated indoor pool every Wednesday. The adults in our Meaningful Day Program are working hard to strengthen Baltimore’s social fabric and empower the workforce this holiday season. It truly feels like the most wonderful time of the year as we go above and beyond to help individuals reach their goals and discover purpose.

As I reflect on the many successes we experienced in 2022, I am also looking forward to the challenges and rewards of 2023. On Saturday, March 25, 2023, we will celebrate the triumphs of the men, women, and children that we support with our twelve programs and services. Please consider becoming a sponsor, hosting a table, purchasing tickets, or making a donation to fund our mission at Tastes, Toasts, & Triumphs!

Together, we are able to bring joy, meaning, and purpose to individuals with disabilities and their families. Thank you for your support and may the holiday season bring you happiness, health, and growth!

Sincerely,
