My League Story, Camping & Recreation: Patrick H.

Patrick and his family spent their first week of camp at Camp Greentop* in 1998. In the fresh air of the Catoctin Mountains, he was liberated to pursue his passions and his independence with his peers. Patrick loves music, creative writing, and connecting with people. Through the Work Experience Program, Patrick completed general camp jobs under the supervision of a Work Experience Coach, including setting up and cleaning the dining hall, delivering laundry, sorting mail, delivering water jugs, assisting in a program area, or assisting with a special task. When not working, Patrick could join a cabin group for scheduled activities.

While Patrick loves the the recreation and relationships available at Camp Greentop, he has developed a sense of wanderlust and an appetite for adventure through The League's assisted travel weekends. Patrick has visited Niagara Falls, Disneyworld, and Cancun with his League family. Travel companions become friends for life as they experience new and exciting things together, like the fireworks over Magic Kingdom or the salty splash of Niagara Falls.

The League continues to encourage Patrick to spread his wings and ultimately attain his goals of independent housing a career as a creative writer. After all, most successful stories start with a step outside of your comfort zone.

*Camp programming was limited this year due to construction at Camp Greentop.

Board of Directors Updates

We are so grateful to the men and women who invest in our welfare with their invaluable volunteer leadership. Thank you to Dr. Richard M. Katz for his unwavering dedication to our participants and our mission. As the Vice-President of Medical Affairs and Chief Medical Officer of the Mt. Washington Pediatric Hospital and Medical Director of the Mt. Washington Pediatric Hospital Feeding Disorders Program, Dr. Katz is an extremely busy man but he always made time to share his time, resources, and expertise to enhance League operations and programming. Though your term has expired, we know that you will always be a dear friend to The League for People with Disabilities.

On Thursday, June 15th, League participants gathered in the garden to celebrate Immediate Past Board Chair Nicole Urquhart Bradley. Several participants expressed their gratitude with hugs, smiles, selfies, and songs from the heart.

Nicole's leadership facilitated the expansion of our programs and services during the pandemic, doubling the size of our outdoor garden space and amplifying the impact of our resources in the community. Nicole is a treasure to the youth and adults with disabilities that we serve and we are grateful for her continued compassion and support. Thank you for being awesome!

A Concluding Note from Our New Board Chair

Dear Friends of The League,

My name is Mindy Geppi and as the newly-appointed Chair of The League’s Board of Directors, I am so happy to share a little about myself with you. 8 years ago, my good friend Tom Ellis asked me to join the Board of Directors and it has been my pleasure to get to know The League’s participants, staff members, and supporters ever since. In addition to The League, I have been involved in other organizations for people with disabilities because I find joy and fulfillment in doing charity/volunteer work, joining committees and boards, and helping out where I can.

It has always been important to me to support improved health, animal care, education, and disability rights. I have served on the Board of Directors of the National Kidney Foundation, the St. Joseph’s Medical Center, and The Children’s Guild. I have also volunteered on committees for the Alzheimer’s Association Greater Maryland Chapter, and Senior Dog Sanctuary of MD, Inc., chairing fundraising events for Habitat for Humanity, House for the Heart, Maryvale Preparatory School, and St. Paul’s School.

This past March, it was my privilege to co-chair Tastes, Toasts, & Triumphs, an evening of great success to benefit The League, along with fellow Board Member and Event Co-Chair Ashley Ingraham Watts. While I am still glowing from the momentous show of support from our annual event, I cherish the opportunity to serve special lunches to League participants and staff members during the Board-Sponsored Holiday Luncheon every December. As a lifelong resident of Maryland and a mother of two, I love my family and am deeply proud to have them, and my closest friends, involved in my philanthropic ventures. I look forward to chairing the Board of Directors with integrity and accountability by following in the prolific footsteps of Nicole Urquhart-Bradley. Thank you for your support of The League and its mission! Happy Summer!

Sincerely,

Mindy Geppi
