My League Story: Behavior Support Services, Mike & Paul

Paul (pictured left) with his support counselor Mike (pictured right) in The Wellness Center.

For the past four months, Paul and Mike have developed a daily routine that is equal parts recreation and volunteerism. As Paul’s direct support counselor, Mike has been working hard to maintain a routine that permits opportunities for fun, growth, and advancement while also giving back to the community.

Every morning, the pair warms up for the day with a thirty minute walk on the treadmills in The Wellness Center. They also spend some time in the extended garden space when the weather is nice. Then, they head into the community together to volunteer with Meals on Wheels or New Life Mission where Paul serves juice to men and women recovering from addiction. Paul does an excellent job focusing on his task and enjoys helping other people. Before returning to The League, Mike will stop at Roland Park or the mall so that Paul can practice appropriate public behaviors and successfully integrate with his surroundings. He especially likes swinging in the park and shopping at Macy’s.

Even though Mike has only been working with Paul since May, he has already learned so much about how to support Paul in his goal for employment. Paul has an incredible memory and affinity for dates. He loves watching the Gameshow Network and using his tablet to play lottery games. Mike plans to build upon Paul’s interests and strengths as they seek a fulfilling job wherein he will excel.

Mike finds his role with Paul to be extremely rewarding; he has always wanted to help other people. Mike endeavors to make each day a great day for Paul as they strengthen their relationship, assist vulnerable populations, modify behaviors, and make progress towards their goals. The League is very fortunate to have amazing direct support professionals like Mike who are invested in the well-being and success of individuals with disabilities!

Campers Had a BLAST This Summer!

The League would like to thank the Children’s Fresh Air Society Fund of the Baltimore Community Foundation for their continued support of Camp Greentop! Because their philanthropic goals align with the summer programming that we offer to youth with disabilities, we were able to pack our summer with incredible outdoors experiences.

The League Hosts Delegates from Azerbaijan

It was our privilege on September 1st to welcome six individuals from Azerbaijan for their first visit to the United States. Arranged through the State Department, the purpose of this visit was to gain insight into how civic groups and organizations form alliances, build coalitions to address issues, and create programs. Their visit to The League was their only planned visit to a disability organization. David, President & CEO, and RenĂ©e, Vice President, Medical Programs/Chief Nursing Officer, lead the visit with a tour and meaningful discussion surrounding disability rights, programs, and attitudes both in the United States and in Azerbaijan.

As a fairly regular stop on the Department of State’s International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP), The League periodically hosts visitors from across the globe to share information and learn about disability services in other countries.

A Concluding Note from Our President & CEO

Dear Friends of The League,

We had an incredible summer together spending time in the fresh Thurmont air, dancing in the extended garden space, and feeling the salty breeze on our faces in Baltimore’s Inner Harbor. The joy and excitement from this summer’s vibrant programming will carry us into the approaching Fall season with an invigorating sense of purpose and optimism. I cannot wait to share more about the countless thrills and opportunities coming our way!

Speaking of thrills, mark your calendars for Saturday, October 8th and join us at CLUB1111’s Halloween Party from 5PM-9PM for dancing, costumes, games, and much more! Our most recent CLUB on September 10th brought old and new friends together with guests, caregivers, and volunteers to groove on the dance floor thanks to the musical stylings of DJ Rosie! I was happy to see Board Members Janice Jackson and Terri Seitz Parrish sipping mocktails and busting a move!

I am proud to share that the enormous success behind our 5th Annual #OMGFOOD Event has permitted increased guest capacity, higher revenue goals, and maximized outreach efforts in the form of our annual fundraising event rebranded as Tastes, Toasts, & Triumphs! On Saturday, March 25, 2023, we will taste delectable local cuisine, toast the extraordinary men and women who have made our work possible, and celebrate the stories of triumph from our participants. Together, we are able to make a difference in the lives of individuals with disabilities and their families! Thank you for your role in giving us a reason to celebrate accomplishments, big and small!

Sincerely,
