November marks the end of our 2019 field season.
This spring the MSA’s
stocking effort saw a total of 534,227 first feeding salmon fry stocked in 33 sites on the Northwest Miramichi river, 7 sites on the Cains river and 7 sites on the Main Southwest Miramichi river. Through our stocking efforts we are hoping to increase the abundance of juvenile salmon in the river. This year’s broodstock have all been collected and spawned and we are now waiting for their eggs to hatch so that we can begin our stocking effort in the spring of 2020. Typically, eggs hatch in late March or early April and are ready to go to the river shortly thereafter.
Our
smolt estimate program on the Little Southwest saw 2452 smolt captured by our smolt wheel. Of these, 1132 were tagged with non invasive streamer tags and released 5 km upriver. We were able to recapture 39 tagged smolt. From the number of smolt we recaptured we were able to determine that our smolt wheel was working at about a 4% efficiency rate.
