On Wednesday February 13th, 2019 the Miramichi area was hit with yet another major winter storm. The combination of high winds and heavy snowfall culminated in the collapse of the smaller of the two arch span buildings located at the MSA hatchery in South Esk, NB. Fortunately no one was hurt during the incident.
Despite this unfortunate setback, the hatchery remains
fully functional.
Sadly however, a portion of the smolts collected last spring as part of CAST's Smolt to Adult supplementation program were lost. Thanks to the hard work of staff, a significant water line break was quickly contained ensuring water flow and oxygen levels were, and continue to be, maintained in the larger arch span building where all of the adult SAS fish are being held. Hatchery operation remain fully functional despite this setback.
We will be keeping you updated as we manage through this unfortunate event.
