MSA Issues Press Release - 'Salmon in Crisis'
SOUTH ESK, July 23, 2018 - The mighty Miramichi River is legendary for its wild Atlantic salmon and the camps along the iconic river that have sustained generations of families. Today the salmon, and those who depend on it for their living, are in crisis. Striped bass populations have exploded with the undesired side effect of swallowing up young salmon. The Miramichi Salmon Association Inc. (MSA) is taking steps to raise awareness about the risks to New Brunswick salmon populations.

MSA supports Commercial License for First Nation Community

By Nathan Delong
As reported in the July 24, 2018 issue of the Miramichi Leader, the Natoaganeg (Eel Ground) First Nation community outside of Miramichi has had a license approved for a commercial striped bass harvest. With close to a million bass spawning in the Miramichi River, a population that has tripled since 2016, it’s a  known fact that striped bass feed on juvenile salmon during their migration to the ocean. It is the hope of the MSA that measures such as this commercial fishery will aid in getting the bass population under control.
Miramichi Salmon Classic - A Great Success
For 13 years, the MSA has hosted the Miramichi Salmon Classic, a three day event exploring the salmon pools of the Miramichi and the hospitality of its people. This past July 8th-11th, the Miramichi hosted almost 30 anglers from across the continent, from Nova Scotia to Texas and all in between. We kicked off the week with a lobster dinner on Sunday evening, to welcome everyone to the area. Fishing continued from Monday to Wednesday with a session in the morning and in the evening, with a break for lunch at noon. Many fishing stories were shared over lunches at Upper Oxbow Lodge, the Renous Rec Centre, and even here at the MSA hatchery for a BBQ on the last day! Close to a dozen bright fish were hooked, with even a few of them being landed! Thank you to all who attended, we look forward to seeing you next year!

MSA Field Program Update
The beginning of July saw the last of our first feeding fry being released into the Sevogle river area marking the end of our 2018 stocking season! The MSA field crew has been quite busy scouting for small cold-water seeps along the Little Southwest River and on the main Southwest Miramichi River. The crew found areas with multiple seeps to be dug out and channelized...
