June 2022 Update
Our team is wrapping up smolt estimate work via smolt wheels on the Dungarvon River and Northwest Miramichi River. We are also setting up salmon protection barriers at the NW Miramichi and Dungarvon River sites. Thank you to our returning crews for carrying out such important work!
I encourage you to visit DNRED’s website or the yellow middle section of the 2022 Fishing Regulations book- there’s an important angling survey to submit back to the province of NB. This information is kept confidential and helps us better understand populations for Atlantic Salmon, trout, striped bass, etc.
The Icebreaker and First Cast events are both back this year. Thank you to the volunteers on the ground who are making these events happen. It’s great to be back with in-person engagement events.
We are also planning our first-ever ‘Directors’ Day’ session at the South Esk office. It’s an opportunity to welcome MSA directors to our facility and network as a team. If you’re a director, be sure to watch for more information.
Art and writing contest entries have been collected, and our team is reviewing all of the original pieces of art and writing! Finalists will be sent on to the Bobak Family for review and we will be announcing category winners shortly. Thank you to all of the schools and students who participated in this annual event!
Fry from our traditional fry stocking program will soon be released to the Cains River and to the SW Miramichi River at Juniper. The fry are healthy and strong, and we are excited for them to get back to the Miramichi River shortly.
Field programs continue- whether it’s preparation for cold water work, training for upcoming juvenile assessments through electrofishing, or planning for the smallmouth bass eradication, we are happy to lead and engage in boots-in-the-water conservation on the Miramichi. Thank you for your ongoing support!
