President's Update -
Dr. Robyn McCallum
June 2022 Update

Our team is wrapping up smolt estimate work via smolt wheels on the Dungarvon River and Northwest Miramichi River. We are also setting up salmon protection barriers at the NW Miramichi and Dungarvon River sites. Thank you to our returning crews for carrying out such important work!

I encourage you to visit DNRED’s website or the yellow middle section of the 2022 Fishing Regulations book- there’s an important angling survey to submit back to the province of NB. This information is kept confidential and helps us better understand populations for Atlantic Salmon, trout, striped bass, etc.

The Icebreaker and First Cast events are both back this year. Thank you to the volunteers on the ground who are making these events happen. It’s great to be back with in-person engagement events.
We are also planning our first-ever ‘Directors’ Day’ session at the South Esk office. It’s an opportunity to welcome MSA directors to our facility and network as a team. If you’re a director, be sure to watch for more information.

Art and writing contest entries have been collected, and our team is reviewing all of the original pieces of art and writing! Finalists will be sent on to the Bobak Family for review and we will be announcing category winners shortly. Thank you to all of the schools and students who participated in this annual event!

Fry from our traditional fry stocking program will soon be released to the Cains River and to the SW Miramichi River at Juniper. The fry are healthy and strong, and we are excited for them to get back to the Miramichi River shortly.

Field programs continue- whether it’s preparation for cold water work, training for upcoming juvenile assessments through electrofishing, or planning for the smallmouth bass eradication, we are happy to lead and engage in boots-in-the-water conservation on the Miramichi. Thank you for your ongoing support!

Icebreaker Barbeque
Honouring the Wade Family
June 4th
The MSA Icebreaker BBQ is almost sold out so if you haven't purchased tickets yet, and you would like to attend, please click the link below or give Vanessa a call at 506-622-4000. The Icebreaker BBQ is being held on June 4th at the "Dome" across from the Central NB Woodsman Museum in Boiestown from 4pm until 7pm.

This year the MSA will be honouring the Wade family and Wade’s Fishing Lodge for their part in the history of the Miramichi outfitting industry. For more than 50 years, the Wade family name was synonymous with the Miramichi and salmon fishing. We look forward to celebrating the Wade’s rich Miramichi history together!

Come on out for a fun and casual evening featuring a great BBQ, a live auction, a silent auction, and some fun draws. We will also have musical entertainment throughout the evening. Make sure to bring a long sleeve shirt in case the bugs are bad!

Tickets are available now by clicking the link below.
NB Anglers Survey
In an effort to make informed and accurate management decisions, it is essential that accurate catch data be collected each year. As an angler you can do your part by filling out the creel survey in the Fish NB angling regulation guidebook. The creel survey is in the center of the Fish NB booklet on yellow paper. You can also help out by filling in your Crown Reserve creel survey, which is included in your Crown Reserve information package if you were a successful applicant. You can also report your catch by clicking the link below.

MSA's First Cast
Do you love fly fishing and have a child or grandchild with whom you’d like to share the fun and satisfaction of the sport?  If so, on Saturday, June 25 and on Sunday, June 26, the Miramichi Salmon Association will host our 10th annual First Cast MSA, a free event for everyone (young and old) who are eager to learn about the sport of fly fishing for Atlantic salmon. This is an excellent opportunity for a “relatively experienced” fisherman to bring along someone who is new to the sport and, with the help of volunteers from the MSA, participate in a two-day mentoring experience guaranteed to be the start of a life-time of fly fishing.

MSA's Bruno Bobak Memorial Art Contest
For the last 65 years, the MSA has conducted art and writing contest for school children of the Miramichi. In 2016, our Art Contest was renamed in memory of Bruno Bobak, a celebrated artist and passionate supporter of the MSA.

We have received all the entries for our MSA writing and art contest for 2022 and we will be sifting through the numerous entries over the next couple of weeks. Thank you to everyone who submitted entries - we appreciate them all! Thank you also to the Bobak family for sponsoring this contest and for providing the winning school with a beautiful framed print each year. We're looking forward to next year's entries already!
Miramichi Fishing Report
by Brad Burns
Fishing Friends – It seems that there are more opportunities right now than there is time to take advantage of them. I thought that I would make a purely brook trout fishing trip up to the Cains this past week without the worry that I could have instead been fishing for bright salmon. I got fooled. On May 22, 2022, Colin Gilks fishing in Blissfield, caught a beautiful salmon that measured 40 inches with an 18-inch girth. It must have weighed around 20 pounds.
Reminder to Anglers and Recreational Boaters
As a reminder to anglers and recreational boaters , we encourage you to be aware that disease can easily be spread from one river to another as in the case of didymo, which spread from rivers in Quebec to the Restigouche river system in New Brunswick in 2006. We encourage you to take the proper steps to disinfect you fishing gear. For information on how to disinfect your gear, this please click the link below.
