Vol. 26 November 2019
Conservation Update
by MSA Biologist Kelsey McGee
The MSA field crew has been very busy with the MSA beaver dam management program and broodstock collection throughout the month of October. Beaver dams are known barriers to adult Atlantic salmon migrating upstream to spawn, blocking access to habitat in the upper reaches of brooks and streams. Beavers can repair active dams within a 24-hour time frame, which means the notching or removal of the dams must be correctly timed with the upstream migrations of the salmon so as to not waste time and resources. 20 dams were notched this year in multiple rivers in the Miramichi watershed.
Broodstock collection began during the last week of September and carried on until mid-October. Spawning has occurred at the MSA Conservation Center and the eggs will now overwinter at the hatchery until spring . We would like to thank all the students and volunteers that came out to help.

2019 MSA Photo Contest Winners
This year, the MSA photo contest received almost 60 photos from participants. Once again Iris Ciecko was the overall winner. We determined this by having our photo contest judges narrow down the entries in each category to 2 photos. With these 2 photos in hand, we surveyed 15 random individuals and had them choose their favorite photo in each category thereby determining a winner by the number of votes that each photo received. Iris won the "Scene" category and the "People" category. Ian Cavanagh won the "Angling" category and Dawson Hovey won the "Kids" category. We would like to thank ALL the participants in this year's photo contest and hope to see many more photos next year. Thank you to Bass Pro Shops for donating the gift card prizes to the photo contest winners.
