Field season is upon us for 2019 and it is looking like an exciting spring/summer!! Our smolt wheels are being prepped for installation this May; These wheels will serve as the collection platform for our smolt tracking program (a joint project with the ASF), smolt estimate program, and for smolt collections for other projects being done by DFO and Dalhousie University. This will be the 6
th
year for the smolt tracking program on the Northwest River, which has been done to determine movements and survival of smolts migrating from the Miramichi River to the ocean. The Striped bass egg and larval survey will also continue this year as soon as the bass start to spawn.

DFO Announces Striped Bass
Bag Limits for 2019
|
|
This year, the retention period for the recreational fishery started on April 15 and will end on October 31, 2019. The daily bag limit will remain the same as in 2018 at three fish per day and the possession limit will remain the same at a total of three fish at any given time. Striped bass retained in the recreational fishery must measure between 50 and 65 cm total length. During the spawning period, which takes place approximately from mid-May to mid-June, fishing will not be permitted in a 6.5 km portion of the Northwest Miramichi River for five days. This area is the only confirmed successful spawning ground for this striped bass population. DFO employees will monitor spawning activity to determine when the closure will take place. Specific dates will be communicated on the
Gulf Region’s website
to inform the public.

The 23rd annual Ice Breaker Dinner took place at the NB Woodsman museum on Saturday April 27th, 2019. There was a great turnout for this popular MSA event which honoured long-time MSA supporters and musical entertainers Harry Pond and Bliss Spencer. The NB Woodsman museum staff did an excellent job preparing and serving a delicious meal which included both salmon and beef, new potatoes, carrots, fiddleheads and a lovely dessert. The evening started with a cocktail and smoked salmon reception and silent auction. After dinner there was a card draw for a print titled "Miramichi Forever" by artist John Swan. A live auction followed dinner which included a number of fishing trips and works of art. The MSA would like to thank everyone who came out to support this important MSA fundraising dinner We look forward to seeing you next year!
