The Legislative Round Up

It was great while it lasted--the ability to open our windows during the day and at night without being covered with yellow pollen like we're lemon-pepper chicken. But there is hope on the horizon: April showers will be here with them come May flowers, which put us another month close to my favorite time of year--Summer.

I'm impatient, honestly, impatient for things to heat up, the air to be clearer, and the ocean to be warm enough to warrant a trip to the beach. But I think the reason things take time is to teach us patience, and that is needed in other parts of our lives--even politics.

This week is the deadline to file any bills you think would benefit your district and/or the state, and while that feels like that has to be accomplished at a neck-breaking speed, after the deadline comes the time to wait. Believe it or not, Republicans and Democrats alike take time to meet as a group within their respective caucus to discuss bills that are filed, even before the bills make it to the House floor. It's a great way to find out what's important to people in parts of the state that you're not that familiar with or might have visited but have never lived.

I firmly believe that the majority of us want the best for our state and the people who live in our district. And that takes time--patience and time.

Around the District:

• Registers of Deeds from all over the state visited the General Assembly this week, and I was honored to give them a tour of the House Floor. A big thanks to Franklin County's Register of Deeds Brandi Brinson, who organized the group's visit. I appreciate all that Registers of Deeds do for our citizens, and I also recognize that deed + title fraud impacts *all* of us, no matter our political party, which is why I worked with Democratic House Leader Reives to file two bills to help with deed and title fraud: H360 Homeowner Protection Act. and H361 Funds to Fight Deed and Title Fraud.

• The Golden Leaf Foundation is now accepting registrations for April webinars. These sessions are specifically designed for potential applicants (including community colleges, K-12 school systems, cooperative extensions, cities, towns, counties, and nonprofits) to learn more about Golden LEAF's priority areas under the Community-Based Grants Initiative in the North Central Prosperity Zone, which includes Franklin and Vance Counties. • Wednesday was North Carolina Association of School Administrators (NCASA) Advocacy Day. Dr. Rhonda Schuhler, Superintendent of Franklin County Schools, and I met to discuss the Association's legislative priorities for this session year and all the good things our local public schools are doing.

• Krystle Lindsey, Community Schools Coordinator at Clarke Elementary School in Henderson, visited and shared with me all the ways she and others like her are using the assets of the local community to enhance parent engagement, student achievement, and staff support at Clarke Elementary. Keep up the good work!

• Thanks to my friend and colleague Senator Tim Moffitt for sponsoring my son Hudson as his Senate Page this week. He got to experience how the other Chamber operates and serves the state.
