As August rounds the corner into September, it signals the official end to the summer break and those theoretical days-of-laze. In its place are blaring alarm clocks incessantly honking early-morning motivational serenades by which to lure us out of bed and into daily routines, schedules, and demands. Are you ready to hit that snooze button again? While we adjust our internal alarm clock so we can be productive during daylight hours, one organism, the beach evening primrose (Oenothera drummondii), does its best work as the sun sets. This woody shrub is commonly found along southeastern dune systems, and as daytime melts into dusk, the beach evening primrose flourishes -- opening up a semi-translucent yellow flower that blooms throughout the evening and early morning. During this period, it serves as an effective pollinator for insects, such as moths, that are more active in the evening hours. Although the primrose produces a delicate, beautiful bloom, don't let the name fool you...this plant is a prima donna! Not only salt and drought tolerant, the beach evening primrose has an extensive root system that enables it to spread out across the sand and aid in dune stabilization, along with plants like sea oats and sea beach amaranth. No matter what time of day you flourish, we hope that this new school year is off to a good start. As you begin to plan out your year, be sure to take advantage of these educational opportunities from the S.C. Sea Grant Consortium and our partners. (photo credit: E.V. Bell)
