Quarterly Newsletter: Fall 2025

Message from the President

Hello Friends,

This is the first e-newsletter from your Friends of the Library Board.

I'd love to invite you to stop by the library soon! Whether you've been a patron for years or just recently discovered our shelves, your support and contributions have helped keep our library a vibrant part of the community.

There is always something new to discover here. One book I’m especially excited about right now is the first book for adults by Louis Sachar, The Magic of Tiger Castle. As a child if you enjoyed his most famous other work, Holes, you won't want to miss this one--it's imaginative, thought-provoking, and a wonderful reminder of why we love stories.

So, come on by--say "hello", browse the shelves, attend a program, or just enjoy a quiet corner with a good book. The library staff will be delighted to see you!

Warmly,

Deann Randle

Friends Board President

author of Holes,

In Praise of Libraries, Reading, and Book Clubs

Humans are the animal that tells stories. Ancient humans told each other stories to entertain, to teach, and to promote group cohesion. When reading and writing were invented, they became the basis for the progress of civilization. When invention of the printing press made books and literacy widely available in the 1500s, knowledge and civilization took another giant leap. Reading for pleasure as well as learning became an important use of our time.

Free public libraries were invented in America to promote reading and have contributed greatly to America’s greatness. Reading is not only enjoyable, reading helps increase our knowledge, stimulates our imagination, improves our ability to reason, and strengthens mental concentration. But guess what! Reading is declining in America! People are relying ever more on (and some are becoming addicted to) social media, which tend to cause a shorter mental attention span, often fake facts, and a lack of critical thinking. Your public library can help reverse this troubling trend.

Make it a goal to read at least one book a month. Even better, join a library book club, which will encourage your reading and will be a fun and informative way to discuss books with other book lovers. Many friendships have been formed through book clubs.

The Marble Falls Public Library hosts four adult book clubs: The Mystery book club, the Classics book club, the Monday (general reading) book club, and the Birding book club. Kids can get into group reading too with the Library’s Unleashed book club, which lets kids read to dogs! Kids love it! Finally, if you enjoy poetry (or would like to) the Library hosts the MultiVerse poetry program where you can hear and read great poetry (including your own).

Check the Marble Falls Library website or ask one of the Library staff for more information about any of these book clubs. If you are a member of a non-library book club, the Library Friends will be glad to list it in our newsletter to help you attract new members. Talk with Library staff about joining or starting a book club. Book clubs are fun, informative, and a great way to encourage friendship.

Kate Messner comes to the library!

Kate Messner is the author of the picture book "How to Write a Story," and many other works of fiction and nonfiction for young people.

On Wednesday, November 19, 2025, at 1 pm, the library will host an author talk featuring Kate Messner. "This author gives her books an imaginative twist," Misty Smith said. "The kids are engaged and inspired by these works."

An example of this lively style is that a mermaid and a sea serpent are the unlikely main characters in "How to Write a Story."

"It's important that the kids leave feeling motivated and inspired," said Ms. Smith. "The kids will leave with a good memory of visiting the library."

The author program featuring Kate Messner is open to the public. For more information, call the library at 830-693-3023.

Exciting Year for the Thrift!

This summer brought in hundreds of tourists who all enjoyed finding treasures here. The heat has not stopped people from cleaning out their homes. We have received amazing donations daily and there is no shortage of merchandise to be sold.

This year marks 40 years since the Marble Falls Library Thrift Store opened and we held a three month long super sale to celebrate the occasion. It was a great success!

We are welcoming Fall with other great sales. Beginning in October, Mondays will be Seniors Day. Everyone age 55 and over will receive a 25% discount. On Tuesdays, everyone will receive 10% off and on Wednesdays we will honor our heroes with a 25% discount.

Also, we are in the process of expanding our space! Renovations are expected to be complete in December. We will keep the public updated on specific dates through our Facebook page. Please reach out to the store manager with any questions. 830-693-5120
