Featured Members: Dick & Mary Ann Boger | Sunday, April 11, 2021
Mary Ann is a native of Macon and graduated from Presbyterian College majoring in English. After rearing three sons and owning a 110 acre vineyard in Rabun Co., she decided to pursue education as a career. She received two MEd degrees, Special Needs and Visually Impaired. She is currently pursuing her Education Specialist designation at UGA and teaching visually impaired students as an itinerant teacher for 20 students in K-12 in the Gwinnett County School System.
Dick is a Midwesterner having grown up in East Lansing, Michigan and graduating from the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor) with a BA in Economics. After working as a branch manager and later as an economic analyst for a large bank in Michigan, he spent two years during the Vietnam conflict in the Naval Security Group, intercepting, transcribing and sending reports to NSA at Ft. Meade of electronic transmissions retrieved from the SE Asia arena. Following his service, he worked in the trade credit insurance division of Export-Import Bank in Washington before moving to Atlanta in 1972. He began a 30-year career in the commercial insurance brokerage business, first with Parker & Co./Frank B. Hall & Co. (now Aon Corp.) and then with Boger, Reid & Flournoy and Export Insurance Services, two firms he founded and later sold, the last in 2002. He then focused on family business (real estate, timber, farming and other holdings) and service on two for-profit boards, CornerCap Mutual Funds (since 1990) and Gray Television, Inc. (since 1991) (NYSE “GTN/GTNA”), along with serving on five committees and chairing two.
Dick met Mary Ann in 2013 in conjunction with serving on the Steering Committee for The Bascom Wine Festival to benefit The Bascom, a fine arts center, in Highlands, NC. This was a year following the death of his first wife, Harriet Owen, who he was married to for 38 years and who was known to several PHP members. Mary Ann assisted Dick in hosting a wine dinner for larger patrons of The Bascom and, in 2019, they married in a private family ceremony in the outdoor stone chapel on the grounds of The Westminster Schools.
They enjoy their cabin in Highlands in the summers and as often as they can during the other months. Dick discovered 6-wicket croquet in 2009 in Highlands at Highlands Country Club where he and Harriet developed a couples sporting activity following her diagnosis of pulmonary fibrosis and a double-lung transplant in 2008. Dick played in his first tournament in 2013 (American Rules) and subsequently has played annually in several tournaments (both American Rules and Golf Croquet) along the eastern seaboard as the seasons changed venues from Florida to the Northeast. The pandemic has slowed his tournament play since 2019 but he looks forward to resuming tournament play as soon as travel becomes safe again. In the meantime croquet at PHP and HCC adequately quell his thirst for active play. In addition to croquet, Dick and Mary Ann have enjoyed finishing their “urban apartment” at PHP and enjoying their contemporary art collection while participating in the arts community in Atlanta.
Mary Ann has three grown sons living in Tulsa, Little Rock and Charleston, respectively, and Dick has one son and daughter-in-law living in Manhattan who have three children with a fourth on the way due in July, 2021.

Here's What's Been Happening at PHP!
ALL MEMBERS please remember to wear your name badges when you are out and about. It will help avoid awkward situations when you're not sure who you're talking to when we are wearing our masks!
Each week, we will be including Member questions about our community. If you have a question you would like answered, please send it to Lauren Tash, Director of Lifestyle Services.
This question was referred to our HOA Board (Andy, Kevin, Dave, Donna, and Rusty French who is currently an advisor to the HOA Board). Here is their response.
Q: What if the community loses power, backup power, or utility service?
A: Our main power is supplied by Georgia Power and is connected to two different sources. If power is interrupted from one source, power is still supplied by the second source. Thus, our power from Georgia Power should be dependable. On campus, all of our power supply lines are underground which is less vulnerable to power outages due to storms. A contractor can cut the power lines when digging which may cause power outages if they did not mark utilities before digging as required of all utility companies. As construction gets closer to completion, the risk will be lower of a contractor hitting a utility and losing service. PHP has backup generators for the Club, Terraces, and common spaces which provide power for the life safety system, emergency lighting, and some critical operations requiring power. From a cost perspective and placement on campus, it is impractical to have the volume of generators necessary to run the whole community.
This question was referred to our Executive Director, Amanda Dumich. Here is her response.
Q: Can Members use the charging stations in The Terraces?
A: The charging stations in The Terraces are used by the Club-owned Teslas which transport Members around town. We do have limited capacity to offer Members access to these stations for their electric or hybrid cars. Members are able to use the two charging stations in The Terraces parking deck between the hours of 9:00 am – 5:00 pm, Monday – Friday based on availability. If you wish to use the charging station, please contact Lauren Tash in Lifestyle Services. She will assign you a dedicated account number which will be used to “fill up” your vehicle. You will see the actual charge for power on your monthly bill along with a $9 station surcharge. Once you have an account, bring your vehicle to Valet and they will facilitate taking your car to The Terraces garage for fill-up and back to your condo parking space.
